This thread is for the discussion of once prominent or obscure online games that have lost their relevance due to loss of interest, neglect, being shutdown, or an update that irreversibly fucked up said game forever.

I've been primarily playing online games for most of my life, starting out picking up numerous free-to-play online games as a kid that I would go on to cherish for the rest of my life. Nothing is quite as fun as a good multiplayer game to go back to everyday, relax, and create unforgettable memories with; but many of these games I've played have since ultimately become forgotten for various reasons, left as nothing more than memories that will be lost in time (like tears in rain).

Some of these online games have managed to become replayable and even gain a new audience via private servers/revivals (quality and quantity of trannies varies), while others have been left to fade away with no way of keeping their memory alive unfortunately. Dead online games are a dime-a-dozen and a sad reality that we're stuck with in this godforsaken timeline.

An example of one of these dead online games was an MMO called LEGO Universe that lived a short life span from October 26, 2010 to January 31, 2012 that was shutdown due to not being able to "build a satisfactory revenue model in our target group."

I had a brief experience with it back in 2011, and had a lot of fun for the little time I got to play it. It's a shame it was shutdown so early and abruptly, I loved LEGO as a kid and a LEGO MMO was the dream for me.

LEGO Universe can fortunately still be played today via a server emulator known as Darkflame Universe (DLU) that can be setup on Windows, macOS or Linux.

Oh man, I played the shit out of those Cartoon Network flash games. I was so young that my memory of them is hazy, but this thread makes me want to revisit them and see whatever- if anything- happened to them.

I remember wanting to play LEGO Universe as a kid but it wasn't available in my country, although there are few online games that I wish to play back then was Darkspore and this one Nickelodeon game that I never got it to work, both games are currently dead now.

A game that I had the most fortunate of playing is old Java web browser Minecraft that they used to had on the official website, there were numerous servers that I joined and there was one zombie mode that was basically a game of tag and had to hop around cobblestone blocks while avoiding players. I only remembered that mode because the game was very limited on what you have, such as no health and hunger bar, just placing and removing blocks as I recall.

I got reminded of it today for other reasons: Dead Island Epidemic. It was a MOBA style game, except it was 3 teams of 4, controls were mouse and keyboard, and your goal was to gather supplies from despicable neutrals/steal them from the enemy. It was a truly unique game, and the only one I've ever been borderline world class at. But for reasons that were never made clear, it was killed around 10 years ago before making it out of beta. I think the publisher killed it to fund Dead Island 2, but that's just a guess.

It's a damn shame, because there's really never been anything else like it.

I like to reminisce on some of the older source mods like Dino D-Day, Modular Combat, Double Action: Boogaloo, etc. Neat mechanics that you normally don't see modeled in other games, but they're all either dead or on life support due to community drama, Valve requiring HL2 and other proprietary titles to launch mods (3rd world playerbases in SHAMBLES), or just in general a waning interest to only a (couple) dozen players or so.

Garry's Mod itself was host to a lot of shittily made gamemodes but some just scratched that 'tism itch real nice. Was fond of Stranded, but nowadays anything remotely interesting is dead.
The general playerbase has dwindled over the last decade, and as a result what's left are a greater proportion of neurotic degenerates inhabiting whatever communities are still kicking. Convicted pedophiles, flamboyant furfags, the french, erotic roleplayers, russian wardodgers, the list goes on.

You reminded be back when Ground Branch and Melonracer gamemodes released. Now they are both faded into obscurity.

Man - I seldom hear about GunZ: The Duel nowadays. The realest vet G's were PCfags back when Xfire still held a light in relevance.

(And I recall Steam still receiving vitriolic amounts of hate in its infancy as well. Too "walled garden" for the spergoloid wizards of olde - but fuck how lenient standards have gotten as of late.)

Oh fuck, I forgot about GunZ. Great game aside from the developers refusing to patch all the K-style bullshit.

AdventureQuest and MechQuest are two that immediately come to mind. Some of the earliest days of "pay to win" that I've seen.

I don't know if private servers exist for this game but I had a lot of fun with Jagex's failed attempt at a TF2/Minecraft hybrid back in 2013.
The game really leaned into the destruction aspect with every block of the landscape being breakable and blowing away all of a building's supports to watch it fall was just as fun as getting into gunfights. Miner was the only class I ever played just for it's drill gun and dynamite so I could break shit more efficiently.

Battlefield Heroes was nice.

It has a private server keeping it alive these days so it's doing better then most online games that have been shut down. When I think about it occasionally it's still hard to believe EA pulled the plug on it, Need For Speed: World, Battlefield Play4Free and FIFA: World all on the same time. They really wanted them gone.

Whoa hey now, Jagex had nothing to do with that game except ruining it. Ace of Spades was a popular /v/core game for years before Jagex got their faggot hands on it. And it was fucking awesome. I loved building swasis and pissing on spergs while people spammed memes in chat
