The city leaders pointed to the need to maintain social distancing in order to prevent greater spread of COVID-19, stating that this takes precedence over people's rights to exercise their First Amendment rights of free speech and assembly.

"You're talking about some of the values we hold in the highest regard in this country and certainly in this city, the right for people to gather, the right to free speech and the right to protest," Shea said during a Monday press briefing. "But now comes the bad news, we're in a pandemic and executive orders have been issued, these are laws that have been passed down through executive order to keep people alive, while we greatly, greatly respect the right of people to protest, there should not be protests taking place in the middle of a pandemic by gathering outside and putting people at risk."

The announcement came a day after the Reclaim Pride LGBT advocacy group protested Mount Sinai hospital's relationship with the Samaritan Purse Christian organization, which set up a field hospital in Central Park for COVID-19 patients in an effort to reduce Mount Sinai's load.

The group objected to the hospital working with the religious organization, claiming that its leadership has espoused bigoted views.

"People who want to make their voices heard, there are plenty of ways to do it without gathering in person," de Blasio said.

The mayor said if people who have messages they want to spread care about protecting other people, "use all the other tools you have to get your point across but avoid anything that might put other people in harm's way."
 
The strictest laws yet still hit the worst. Someone should test this though, somebody find one of the many thugs that will get shot this week and try to make it a race issue.

As much as I some what disagree with the protesters, I hope De Blasio gets a teared a new huge ass hole by the Supreme Court,
1st Amendment
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. "

Disallowing freedom of assembly. Although I understand why because of NYC's high numbers, the way it's worded sets a bad precedent of weakening people's frustrations. Strength in numbers.

Plus, COVID-19 hit NYC the hardest because it's a densely populated city.
 
This is blatantly unconstitutional, and de Blasio is simply exploiting the fact that the courts are effectively closed and there's ostensibly a world-ending pandemic. This is sad.

Unless this field hospital is kneecapping gay people and rubbing Coronavirus blankets on trans people, who fucking cares what their CEO said? Learn to PR, LGBT movement. It looks bad when you try to shut down an emergency field hospital over what some dipstick said.
 
You absolutely have the right to own whatever arms you'd like, but we're putting reasonable restrictions on it. Surely you don't believe you should be able to own whatever weapons of war that you want?
You absolutely have the right to free speech, but we're putting reasonable restrictions on it. Surely you don't believe you should be allowed to make people feel discriminated against with hate speech?
You absolutely have the right to assembly, but we're putting reasonable restrictions on it. Surely you don't believe you have the right to put others at risk from Coronavirus?

We all get the government that we deserve.
 
This is not a reasonable restriction to the prevent the spread of disease, ergo this is unconstitutional and failed presidential candidate Bill should enjoy his lawsuits.
It's also not a reasonable restriction to place an absolute bar on the right to peaceably assemble at any time whatsoever.

The right to peacefully assemble has its limits no matter what people try to claim the constitution implies. Its not the first and will not be the last time restrictions are placed on it during an emergency. and its worth mentioning that 'peaceful assembly' does not doesn't necessarily include protesting, and certainly does not include rioting or doing anything else that may cause public disturbances or harm. Especially during a state of emergency. These protests have 'foreseeable potential rioting and further mass infections' written all over them, which is why they're being prohibited. Supreme court won't touch it because they can't and because its a reasonable thing to do to keep people from massing together for any reason during a pandemic. Its literally the reason everything is shut down in the first place

If the government didn't have the right to put limitations on such assemblies during emergencies you wouldn't see malls, parks and sports stadiums closed down

Remind me again how quick tin pot Democrat dictatorships backtracked on their attempts to indefinitely deny people the right to buy a firearm during muh pandemic.

Even left wing California knew they were going to get the smackdown and backtracked.
 
Honestly NYC should just get walled off and be allowed to implode in on itself via all the trash, septic waste, and corpses it wouldn't be able to ship out to become everyone else's problems... the rest of the country would thank them for it.
