Even in his interviews promoting Batman and Robin, Clooney seemed to have nothing but disdain for the whole enterprise and anyone who might be interested in it. What an asshole.

At best, he's a Walter White where he knows how to be a director, but nothing else. So, when he's made the head honcho, disaster follows because he doesn't know the business part of show business. So, if this movie really is #supershit, Gunn's career is dead because he was given carte blanche by Zaslov, whom I'm finding to be a very overrated CEO.

I think he's closer to Jesse Pinkman. He's adequate at making a very specific, niche type of thing that you get very tired of after 2 or 3 servings.

Only instead of habenero infused meth, it's irreverent, comic-y movies with neck-snapping tonal shifts.

This is one of those times where the “cast unknowns” strategy might eat shit.

It works for indie stuff nobody knows about, but with a dead property like Superman, you kind of need a Jenna Ortega or Nicki Glaser just to jolt people awake.
 
Maybe DC should for once in the fucking past two decades think about what general audiences might want and not whatever goofy ass shit their newest pet director wants.

If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but when people said they didn't want such a dark and brooding Superman I don't think they meant goofy 1950's silver age Superman mixed with Gunns unrestricted humor on top of it.

They do listen, that is why they are in this mess. Every decision by Warner is based on feedback from audiences, however, they do about as well as SEGA and Sonic Team when it comes to understanding and fully addressing things.

This new Superman is the general audience Superman. People told them that Snyder was too dark and needed more color, needed more jokes. Snyder himself was a response to people wanting more Dark Knight style films and based off of the poor reception of Superman Returns, the fact that it needed more action. They don't understand nuance in why people dislike the films, they just go off of audiences broad generalizations.

Most people have no idea what they want out of DC, nor care. General audiences many times cannot articulate why something is bad, which is why you get it isn't funny or lighthearted, or it needed to be darker.

What the DC universe needed was a group of people who could adapt the characters to meet unique tastes while understanding the spirit of the original. They needed the types of teams that work on their animated properties as those nerds always understood how to make the properties appealing. Even if they are not comic accurate, case in point Teen Titans 2003, they were at least able to function on their own and bring in mass appeal. Snyder and Gunn can work in their own corners, but they have no idea how to make an entire universe appealing, they really needed some nerdy autists for that.

Sadly, I think most audiences give so little shit that he is basically forgotten, just like everything in DC's failed universe. When people talk about DC, it really feels like it gets memory held to the 90s-2000s with a bit of early 2010s: The DCAU, Teen Titans 03 & GO, Arkham series, Injustice, LEGO, The Burton films, The Nolan Trilogy, and Donner Superman are most people's view of DC (Maybe also the CW).

What the fuck do DC fans even want, man? Like at this point it's not even a fandom, it’s a psych ward. They imprint on Batman like he’s their deadbeat dad who visits once a year, or Zaddy who's a human protein powder spill. They don't actually like comic books as an art form.

No real answer to this given the obvious splits for a decades old company, but if I had to generalize they want what we get from the animation division. The DCAU is a damn fine base for DC, making it incredibly retarded DC and Warner never really look at it. The direct-to-DVD movies range from classic to bad, but it was pretty clear the New 52 universe was able to drag in an audience and probably could have been decently successful if brought to a big screen, let alone the more loved ones like Under The Red Hood or Crisis on Two Earths.

Easiest answer would be to do an amalgamation of what has already worked. Give us the Superman from STAS or some of those animated films, give us a Batman reminiscent of some form of BTAS/Arkham and B&TB, give us a Titans like 03 or Young Justice, a Green Lantern like TAS, etc.. Hell, maybe just make the universe animated and avoid all the shit live action brings all together.

I used to be a serious DC Comics fan. Found all the old standalone Elseworlds stuff to really get me going: Kingdom Come, Red Rain, The Golden Age, etc. Loved that brand like a diehard fan loves a sports team. The Nu52 stuff was a conscious statement of "WE'RE NOT YOUR BRAND ANYMORE, OLD MAAAAAAAN," so I fell off for the most part for a few years. The Superman Rebirth stuff with kid Jon Kent and the family living on a farm was the first time after I really felt like the comic was what I wanted - wholesome Superdad making full on dad jokes, still getting to do super stuff, Lois being a hot mom while also being mellowed out by the experience to not have to be in constant girlboss mode. It was wonderful. Jon and Damian Wayne had a fun day/night style friendship, we got an homage to New Frontier and the Losers, and then there was some really good stuff being done with The New Superman of China and the dark Red Hood and the Outlaws trinity. It was a great few years. Then Bendis happened... and DC tried to outcompete Marvel at the woke stuff instead of just trying to capitalize on the portion of the market that DIDN'T want that. To this day, the last DC Comic I ever bought was that Superboy Prime issue of Dark Knights where the character gets his ending and tells the reader to "go outside" because all the stories have already been told and told better, at that.

It was good advice.

its a neat pitch, Kyle Rayner being an edgy artist from the 90s/2000s who's now thrust into superheroics, have John Stewart being his uptight angry black mentor who's pissed that some weirdo is being given this immense power because he doesn't act the part of someone in the corps. introduce the whole GL corps and really go all out on Kyle's constructions being absurd instead of the usual Giant fist or Giant gun of other GLs.

the twist is midway through Parallax Hal Jordan comes in and destroys everything, their only hope is for Kyle to go 1 on 1 and kill Hal where he stands, he's the only one with enough courage to withstand him. Except Kyle had too much death and destruction in his personal life to take the life of Hal and comes up with some absurd option that leads to Parallax separating from Hal and Kyle reboots the corps all on his own. almost completely self referencing how Gunn himself is taking a near completely dead studio and rebooting it in his own image.

you can have an end credit scene where they reference something beyond man going around saving people on earth, a "super" man

honestly i just have always loved the idea of some silly artsy type dude that would be the comic relief in other films is forced to be the main hero and i like to imagine Kyle is just a male version of Emily Youcis or Jhonen Vasquez or that pedo Mr.nubley Null likes. just a blatant deranged artist, make him a pg-13 deadpool and DC will be printing checks.

He doesn't care about Kyle, just revealed it in a recent interview that his favorite is Guy and he has no plans for Kyle. LOL
One of the hosts told Gunn that his favourite DC characters are Kyle Rayner, John Constantine, and Mister Miracle. We recently learned that the latter is getting his own animated series, and while the Superman helmer loves Hellblazer, he's less keen on Kyle.

"I like all three of those characters. The second two, I'm a way bigger fan of," he admitted. "I've been online enough to know everyone has their favourite Green Lantern. I'm a Guy guy, right?"

Gunn added, "Constantine, I'm actually a pretty huge fan of. I read every Hellblazer comic as it was coming out. He's a great character, and I like that approach to magic where it's not too overwhelming and he's too powerful."

Swamp Thing would be a good fit for John if James Mangold ever decides to make it. As for Kyle, it sounds like Gunn's bigger priority right now is Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Hal Jordan.
