For a pedophile infamous for deleting thousands of incriminating tweets, Gunn sure is bold to include social media gayness in his movie. This sounds awful, btw. Lex Luthor is the corniest, lamest villain in movie history and I don't know 90% of the characters in this because I am neither gay nor 105 years old. Can't wait for it to make a billion dollars and for redditors to spend the next two years gloating and accusing anyone who didn't like it of being a Snyder cultist.

Hackman Lex was corny but him blowing at the mic and scaring the shit out of Chris Reeve while screaming “MISS TESSMACHER!” is kino.

My litmus test for if a comic book movie passes as an actual film has become, “can my father watch this and still enjoy it.” Usually that depends on them not being retards and using d-listers that nobody cares about and stick to the characters everyone has a fondness for, usually due to childhood memories and keeping the plots reigned-in.

Nobody cares about Gay Gardner, The Engineer, Hawkgirl, the Terrific Buck, Metamorpho, Krypto, Maxwell Lord or this sham “Ultraman” and that’s why it will fail, it’s making “Black Adam” again, same plot, same JSA nobody wants, same ego-driven self-insert. That’s why it will fail, no chad lead for women to flick it to, no epic stakes and very bad CGI.

Snyder got a lot wrong, but at least his Superman was that, a man who didn’t yell at his Lois or cry about a-logs.

Snyder’s one bright idea was giving Lex a motive beyond stealing space rocks. Problem is, he made Lex so young and strange it felt like a school shooter.

Hackman was a gas. Felt more golden age than silver age. No personal grudge against Superman, more like a grudging respect for actually keeping up with his schemes.

Lex always had a motive. He is a control freak that is incredibly rich and smart. His motive is simple: Absolute power and control. He has companies and criminal enterprises to have as much power as possible and more. Then, Superman came and he learned that for all that he has, he still envied others. He envied Superman for his power, his kindness, the admiration others had for him, the fact the world is better with his presence etc etc. He always goes on and on about how if he had Supes powers, he would do things better than him but that is a lie. He is smart enough to know it is a lie. If he had Superman's power, he would create Hell on Earth and knowing that (even subconsciously) eats him alive.

So, all in all, Lex is someone who has so much power in his hands but wants more because he thinks he deserves it. Not being on the top of the food chain hurts him. Having Supes around is proof that he can never become who he thought he already was and that is horrible to his ego.

Lex is a nerdy kid who got smacked around, Superman had two great sets of parents and Lex had a single rotten one and that left him with a raging inferiority complex, enough is never enough and when he’s at the top of the human food chain?

A nice man comes down from the sky, makes headlines by catching a helicopter in one hand and a woman in the other, a woman Lex has interest in, just to double the damage. Everything he is, everything he has, everything he has done pales in comparison to the alien and he knows it.

Lex simultaneously hates Superman and wants to be him. Because Lex has everything and is utterly hollow inside (Luthor: Man of Steel showed this perfectly) , he is a man without humanity. Superman merely existing is offensive to Lex because he’s not the best anymore. He has a lot of copes, like the “pro humanity” cause but he utterly detests humans.

Lex is to Earth what Vril Dox was to Colu and DCAU expertly showed that he’s just a younger Brainiac.

But that is the tragic thing: If he was a genuine and kind man, he would have gotten Lois, he would have the admiration of other, he would have everything he wanted. He just is not. He talks in double speak, he treats everyone like a pawn, acts like everything will be his and is overall someone whose ego overshadows everyone of his good qualities. He wants power to the point he breaks the law and hurts people. Superman has to save the people he hurts and that KILLS him. He cannot comprehend being strong and good at the same time.

Exactly! He copes! He is a human but he lacks any short of humanity. Superman is not a human but is filled to the brim with humanity. And yet, Lex acts like he represents us.

I like the idea that Lex desperately wants love, both the love of the masses that Supes gets, parental love, companionship and all that, but he has fucked up every relationship in his life and is incapable of what he desires.

He wants the idea of Lois, the woman herself is an annoying pain in his ass, he ruined his relationship with his “son” and even the women he made to his specifications (Hope and the Lois robot) he sacrificed in his schemes.

He’s the best supervillain for a reason, he’s fun, he’s well-written, there’s no crazy origin and remove the fantastical elements and you can see his character as a reflection of many modern problems plaguing men, fatherless behaviour, superficial obsessions, wanting to be what they claim to hate, loneliness worsened by layers upon layers of self-loathing and insecurity.

In the right hands Lex could carry his own film.

I'd be down for a Luthor feature — but the Superman-Lois-Lex Bermuda triangle has been done.

LMAO the Pulitzer-winning journalist can’t see through Clark’s dollar store disguise? Worse, she can’t see through Clark, or Bruce, or Lex? It makes her look like a goddamn nimrod.

I'd be down for a Luthor feature film, but I think the Lois Superman Lex love triangle has been done to death already and I really think she should stay out of his orbit. Yes, I know haha. It's really funny that Lois who supposedly has his finally toned bullshit detector. Can't see through Clark's disguise but she can't see through Clark, Kent and Bruce Wayne and Lex luthor. It makes her look more than a little like a nimrod
I don’t like the love triangle either, especially the Bruce version. Lois should be a “nightmare woman” who is unapproachable on good days, who Clark pretty much goes, “Yeah, that’s what I’m taking home to mama,” and in-character embarks on the impossible.

I actually like that Clark is the “one that got away” with her BS detector. Modern Lois actually doesn’t like Bruce and it’s really funny that she is not a fan of the League, especially Diana for obvious reasons.

Lois is shockingly one of the few women in DC who’s still a good character, isn’t “bi” and carries her weight in the relationship (I haven’t read the Lois is Superwoman stuff and I’m not gonna, I’m talking post-crisis and Rebirth-era) and the numerous “Lois gets a gun” moments are still very funny.

He is too smart, egotistic, greedy and ambitious to form real relationships. Always thinking about plans to get his way (good plans too) but never having to actually bond. It is why he likes fighting Supes so much. He is not as smart as him but he can keep up through quick thinking and strength as opposed to everyone else who is just powerless before him.

He wants the idea of Lois, the woman herself is an annoying pain in his ass, he ruined his relationship with his “son” and even the women he made to his specifications (Hope and the Lois robot) he sacrificed in his schemes.
Imo, he never had to learn how to form bonds with others as everyone around him could be manipulated like clay.

I would not say "fatherless". He work better for me as someone who is so smart that everyone felt like programable robots for him to manipulate. So smart that he felt like listening to no one but pretended he did while planning to make them dance to his tune. If I were writing him, he would have been in both physical stuff like boxing and football as well academics as chess club and mathletes. He should be the kind of guy who was popular with everyone (nerds, jocks, teachers, cheerleaders, goths etc) and mastered everything he wanted easily.

His first defeat should be Superman. There might have been setbacks before but that was minions not being able to follow instructions and messing up (Lex would correct those mistakes). Superman should be the first person to truly beat him in anything. That should be the reason for his obsession.

It should be hard to see through that disguise as it is layered. Superman is the embodiment of confidence and strength. He radiates power and confidence. He has the body of a god and the powers to match. He literally floats above mortals and almost never gives the chance to see him at eye level (Clark Kent was the first to interview him). It is also worth noting that Superman does not wear a mask to hide his face meaning that in most people's minds, he does not have a secret identity. Here is what most people think about him: "He probably has a name but it is an alien one and lives in a secret place called "The Fortress of Solitude". That is it. Why would he need a secret identity to begin with?"

Clark, on the other hand, is the kid from Kansas who grew up in a place not even the residents can point out in the map and radiates awkwardness that is matched only by acne-riddled teenagers getting their first boner while the sexy nurse is giving them a check up. He has a body that looks pudgy due to baggy, unflattering clothes and a posture that makes him resemble a Neanderthal. And his glasses are rather unflattering to while distorting his eye color just enough to see that they are green (as opposed to Superman's whose are blue).

Add the fact that those two behave nothing alike and you get a really good disguise.

“Is that Bruce Wayne’s car?”

It would be worth it alone for Lex’s narration and constant feeling of superiority.

“Lois Lane, daughter of Samuel Lane, top dog at the Daily Planet, smart, cunning, beautiful, perfect for me, It remains one of life’s greatest mysteries why she refused my invitation to dinner.”

“Clark Kent, always on the coattails of Lois Lane, cornfed, maladjusted to city life, clumsy, poorly dressed, in every sense, an embarrassment of a human. The one exception being his skill with words, the man is a poet, in the body of a farmhand.”

The defining Lex moment is where he builds a giant computer to figure out who Superman is. It spits out the answer Clark Kent and he scraps the computer because it obviously doesn't work. He simply cannot conceive of someone as powerful as Superman living an unassuming humble life. And that's what makes a great Tragic villain - they have everything they need to succeed but are undone by their own flaws. In Lex's case, his ambition and pride.

The "giant computer" thing probably doesn't age entirely but the point remains pretty solid.

In any case, @Incecticyder has the right of it above: Superman's best disguise is that most people wouldn't think he has one. He's a demi-god who lives in an ice fortress at the North Pole (if they even know that). Why would he be sitting next to you at 8:45am on the subway because he's late for work?

This is why I roll my eyes when people smugly say, "How could no one figure out Clark Kent is Superman? He's wearing glasses!" That being said, Snyder could done better with how Cavill portrayed the two personas, which may have been seen in future DCEU installments.

The differences between Clark and Supes is like Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Spidey has an outgoing personality where he cracks jokes and seems like someone you would share a beer with. Peter, meanwhile, is a socially awkward nerd who struggles to pay the rent. I don't see people asking how come Jameson never figured out Peter is Spider-Man when he gets impossible shots of the superhero.

watching James OKeefe repeatedly pull it off literally with just Clark Kent glasses and a marginally gay-er shirt went a long way to convince me, too

Exactly. I would argue that the lack of a mask is beneficial when next to the Flash or Batman. Those two obviously hide their identity so next to them, he looks undisguised. I think that the fact that he has very generically handsome characteristics such a face pretty enough to like but not so much as to remember (that is where the glasses come in) and you have someone whose appearance is shared by at least 3 guys you will run into.

There is also the suits. Superman wears a suit that shows every muscle and looks like a Greek god in a strongman outfit. Clark Kent wears suits that make him look pudgy. You could see that he has a small gym at home but if he told you that cheeseburgers are his one weakness, you would believe him. His clothes work like a mini fat suit.

In my headcanon, he has taken acting classes. That way he can create the Superman person and have it act like someone completely different than him to throw people off. Superman is confident with a perfect posture and speaks with a city accent. Clark Kent is a small town boy with a small town accent in a city bigger than any place he had ever been to and his posture is horrible.

Also, how many people have seen Clark Kent? I mean actually seen him. Those he interviews, those that work together with him, his childhood friends, his family, some superheroes. That is it. The man writes articles, he is rarely on TV and few of his pictures circulate. No one pays attention to him either because of how bland he tries to be. He also makes sure to have a bland wardrobe to contrast Superman's eye-catching suit.

This is a good disguise.

That is the problem with Snyder. He did not pay attention to Clark Kent. He retains the Superman posture that makes him massive and obvious that he is Superman. Also, he does not act insecure, clumsy or lacking in confidence. Christopher Reeve had better direction. He actually transformed. Henry could pull it off too but he was failed by Snyder.

That too.

In the 90s Clark Kent was a bestselling novelist, in the 70s he was a tv anchor. Is DC really at the point now where no one knows him?
I am not saying people do not know OF him. I am saying that in most versions, he is staying out of the spotlight. You get a picture here and there, an interview where he talks to someone people actually want to hear talk and maybe he had to take over a news segment where he behaved nothing like Superman. People do not care about the news anchors all that much. They have the news on while doing chores or scrolling on their phones only to glance at the TV when someone different than the news anchors says something. All in all, Clark does not try to attract attention beyond what he needs to.

In most adaptations anyway. He is mostly an investigative journalist that writes articles with Lois being the face of the news most often.

Fair enough:

silver age style where he just pulls Super(whatever) powers out of his ass for anything, his SUPER ACTING
Silver Age does not count.
