No idea wtf Dave is talking about here but that's not how Linux works at all.
Linux does include chock loads of binary blobs that only a select few developers (under NDA) have access to the source code for, that much is true. Entire driver stacks have, over the years, been reworked to hide all the proprietary trade secrets behind firmware so that Linux drivers can be developed without issues.
So none of our computing is as free as free software first makes it out to be, but at least with Linux there’s a chance you can some override things you don’t like (about how your hardware operates).
