god i remember being excited about this because it seemed to be one of the few fangames that didnt bore me nor give me strong 'we're not like the canon danganronpa series eww!' vibes atleast to me.

i kinda suspected it to be going down hill in some way after they bent the knee and redesigned a character.

on one hand i can kinda understand why they decided to shut it down but on the other cant they just replace them va?

You should of included the part where said character took the blind guy, melted him in the shower, tore off all his skin, and then pretended to be him the whole trial. He was able to do all this because he read Wada's student profile a week before this happened.
 
Still not even the weirdest shit I've seen come out of DR fanspaces. Truly wish some of these stories weren't do personally identifiable because shit was crazy.

Apologies for the wait but the character, Desmond hall got or atleast planned to be redesign bc people found his hair to be inaccurate. Like I don’t know much about locs but looking at it kinda crazy how the team thought this was gonna let slide in a fanbase like this

Are western fangans a lost cause? It seems that if you want to actually finish a Danganronpa fan project you need to avoid the community like the plague.

Thats because the fanbase is primarily made up of people who hate the very series they're supposedly fans of. It'd be like asking the anti-bethesda people to make skyrim mods. It all just turns into a massive circlejerk about being better than Kodaka.

There's that but I think the biggest issue is that making a Daganronpa fangame requires a decent amount of dedication and you need to actually come up with several murder mysteries and an overarching plot, which is too hard for the average mongoloid who mainly views Danganronpa as being entirely about whacky characters you can pair up together which is probably a big reason why a lot of these projects die off quickly.

Another big issue-and one that applies to fanprojects in general-is that the bigger a project team, the higher odds of some retarded drama bubbling up which can royally fuck up the project like what happened with Eden's Garden. The fact that the only finished fangames were both solodev endeavors despite the vast difference in quality between them isn't a coincidence IMO.

Shame about Project Eden's Garden. The writing was not cringe and the ratio of retarded characters to enjoyable characters was higher than the average official danganronpa game.

I have a habit of following as many random fangan projects as I can, and then watching them die for various reasons. When one actually appears in my subscription feed as having released something other than self serving april fools jokes or fan animations or holiday wishes I'm always shocked. Most of these projects are not very interesting since they're made by teenagers, pedophiles, or some combination of the two.

This legally distinct totally not dangronpa released chapter 1 recently. It claims to be themed after retro anime and other than a few hairstyles it does not look like retro anime whatsoever. No idea if it's good or not, I don't feel like playing it but I might watch it on youtube. It seems to be getting a lot of reviews for how long it's been out compared to other literally who killing games.

An extremely janky and borderline unplayable "murder mystery generator". If you play this demo there is a scripted prologue where 5 people are trapped in a place with no water and forced to play prisoner's dilemma in a zero escape-like situation. If someone gets murdered you can vote out who you think the killer is and there's no punishment for getting it wrong. There's some sort of system where you can talk but it's extremely confusing and doesn't work.

After suffering through the prologue and probably getting murdered you get to play the real game, which as I understand it, is supposed to be a procedurally generated danganronpa simulator where you can set traps, commit murder, barricade your room, stuff like that. You even get to pick who you want to play as and do some setup steps before the game starts.




(This is what the character select screen actually looks like.) I was never able to get much further than this. Depending on who you play as, you are put into a basic escape room or skip an escape room entirely, then end up in a danganronpa class trial room where you have to vote to kill one of 3 people. The problem with that is the voting part breaks the game and it never goes past that.

The developer of this game on steam is listed as Michael Richard Lannon, and he has a long history of making really bad looking janky games and posting on 4chan's /agdg/. What fascinates me about him is that he isn't using AI slop or flipping unity assets to make these games, he clearly seems to care somewhat about the product he's making but it always turns out looking like outsider art. Each of his games wildly jumps from genre to genre and I'm impressed by his ability to execute, even if he's not producing anything worthwhile.

 
A quick minor update on Project Eden's Garden.

The devs have come out and confirmed the project is officially dead (obviously) and the final send-off project has been scrapped because the death order and the majority of the plot points have been publicly leaked, which demoralized the already demoralized dev team.
However, the devs plan to make the codebase for the game open source so anyone can use it for their own future fangames, so at least there's a silver lining here.

I have played the currently avaiable content of this, which is only episode 1 so far and IMO too little. It's not an early acess game and you have to scroll past half the steam page to see it mentioning it's only one episode for 15 dollars (i pirated). It makes me wonder if this is going to take 10 years to finish.

I didnt personally play DG games and not into danganronpa fandom but i watched some tubers and like adjacent games like Ace Attorney and found Kumitantei alright so far. It's entertaining enough, has a LOT of voice acting even outside trials, and the game is inspired by unit 731, a takes place inside a japanese war bunker where it's implied they did biological warfare experiments. It also features a zombie girl that is actually a zombie (???) and it might be supernatural or a bioweapon. The delinquent guy will also call others fat and retarded which was a pleasant surprise to me (they updated the game to add a censored option tho...). I'd play more and i highly recommend avoiding spoilers.

It does suffer from a bloated 16 + 2 mascot cast that slows it down hard, with characters just pointing the obvious to remind you they exist. It took me 7h20mo beat chapter 1 and i'm a fast reader (some slow streamers taking +10 hours). The mc and her brother are pretty great but some characters are cancerously annoying from beginning to end, like the conspiracy guy literally does nothing but scream and the delinquent soldier is irrationally antagonistic. It also has some hyper weeb, cliche, questionable or contrived writing choices but the main problem is that this is literally just danganronpa fangame in anything but name. The only real change is that you get different minigames like mario and galaga hangman and you must play a slow fake Uno card game to win debates, which was cute at first but having 4 in the trial was too much.

It also fakes out a scrumm debate and says it's not worth the effort, which feels like writer rambles.

But what made me want to post on this thread is that i did a little searching if the devs had drama and found out that the lead writer in the game is "Detective Nyx", who was formerly known as Aeris Akamatsu, who i found out to be a danganronpa lolcow infamous for being toxic of trans headcanons and ships. To my surprise they have a thread here.

For those who aren’t in the cesspool that is the Danganronpa fandom, Aeris Akamatsu is a 21-year old Australian autistic nonbinary youtuber who frequently uploads Danganronpa-related content while also being a massive cunt towards anyone who disagrees with her views. And you can tell it's the same person because the name of youtube channel in the thread changed but it's the same one.


This instantly set off a bunch of red flags in my head so tried to find links between the two and the game, managing to find a random thread on r/fanganronpa where the director of the game explains that Aeris was, i kid you not, simply one of the "alters" in the "system" and it has "vanished completely from the headspace" because no one liked her, so Detective Nyx is the "new host".

She made a video explaining this, but no in the farms thread bothered to post, but she didn't seem like a notable lolcow anyway so it's understandable.


Their bluesky says she idendifies as she/they now (ironic as she hated it before) and it seems pretty tame, sharing some random art, games and trans flags. Unrelated but she seems to be a fan of the sexy plastic surgeon girl who acts flirty but i found out is confirmed to be asexual by the devs (and i guess thats the joke?).


This means the chances of characters being revealed as LGBT or mentally ill are extremely high now...

Either way this is a lot to take in but it's worth keeping this writer in mind if, a few years from now, this fangame gets bigger and/or if it crashes and burn over drama.
 
As if my comment was tempting fate, there is already a minor controversy over Aeris/nyx posting a toxic danganronpa opinion on tumblr that lead to backlash and the devs responding on twitter.

But before that, someone did try to cancel Nyx 2 weeks ago over *allegedly* protecting a pedo back in 2020-2021

I don't know who/when started but searching kumitantei leads to a bunch of people being passive agressive about it, and even hijacking random people to spread that screenshot and bash nyx. They're also bringing shit from 4+ years ago to light that shouldn't matter as the nonbinary formerly know an "Aeris akamatsu" doesn't "exist" anymore.

I did not play kill/cure but i'll actually side with Aeris/Nyx on it being "extremely too late" because if this shit was announced in 2018 and you still don't have a single chapter 8 years later then that shit is NEVER finishing lol. It actually took longer to release than another official danganronpa game.

Despair time apparently only has 2 chapters too and was revealed around 2018? Yall really making it hard to defend here... But oh yeah, the devs actually responded and got nyx to apologize.

The irony is that the people asked the devs how they didn't know and they say she posted it over a year ago so it sounds like this "controversy" was a nothingburger and some people are working overtime to hurt Kumitantei's reputation and doing it by targeting Nyx.

This reminds me o a minor drama 2 days ago cause someone came out saying that the Kill/Cure devs went their way to make Project Eden Garden look worse as possible during the pedo drama, by refusing to communicate properly and sharing the news like a celebration.

It feels so weird to watch this whole thing unfold in real time as i glanced the kumitantei tag on twitter at random over the last 3 days. I checked the game, i like it, i find out the writer has a lolcow past, i fear the inevitable call out, it happens, they get cancelled, game's schedule is (probably) fucked.

Is this what being a true fanganranpa fan feels like?
