Do you know a specific ruling where this is laid out? Not trying to argue, just curious as I never studied law in Tennessee and I've been trying to find some clear legal guideline for how their courts decide on provocation. But its exceedingly difficult to find a case that even comes close to the circumstances for this one.
One of the things I've found challenging is that most of the cases I've seen where a provocation lead to unaccepted self-defense claim was between two people who were familiar and had an ongoing feud, like neighbors/family members/friends who had a falling out so there was some time to establish if someone had intent to escalate. Couldn't find anything that happened between strangers who just escalated on the spot.

Here is a 1995 decision from a TN court of appeals (below the TN supreme court) in which a nigger did not get to get away with murder because (he claimed) the victim called him the nigger word, after the nigger snatched money out of the victim's hands:
