Ross from Accursed Farms doing a review on one of their games reminds me that this thread is overdue. For those that haven't heard of them, Daedalic Entertainment were a German game developing and publisher, which were known for making pretty good Point and Click adventure games. Their end came when they spent the last couple of years trying to make a AAA game. The result of which was Gollum, which was a massive flop and killed the studio as a developer.

It's all a shame, since they made some good games that were fun, good looking and relatively devoid of politics.

I recommend those that haven't to try Deponia, Edna & Harvey, Night of the Rabbit and their Dark Eye universe games.

Never played any of their games but all I know is that Gollum was awful and it is unfortunate that was the last thing internally developed by Daedalic Entertainment.

I tried the Deponia series a couple of years ago. I forced myself to play through the first one and stopped like 20 minutes into the second. The story isn't that compelling, I still couldn't give a shit less about the characters or setting -not to mention the contemptable asshole protagonist trope is way too overused- and oh my god all of the moon logic puzzles that there are. I do admit that I loved the art style and music, and the acting was very well done especially for a dubbed game. If I would have played it as a child I probably would have enjoyed this series a whole lot more.

Deponia is a goddamn masterpiece. I've been backseating streamers for years, helping them finish it.

The post above says the dude spent 20 minutes in the game... It's literally nothing. And the first game is the least interesting of the four. The story is abso-freaking-lutely worth it. Even if it's a rather comedic game, the ending is kind of heartbreaking. So much so that it was SUPPOSED to be a trilogy, and the 4th game was released because the fans were whining that much, saying the ending is too damn sad. But no worries, they don't get what they asked for, they received a giant middle finger - but in a form of a great game.

Rufus is supposed to be an asshole. Hell, it's even explained later. Not to spoil much, but there's something anti-heroic to him at times. But you'll have to find out on your own.

The game is for sure dialogue-heavy, but they're all well-written. By the way: each object in the game you can pick up warrants a different, object-specific voiceline from Rufus. Obviously, a snarky one.

And just an extra piece of information: buying "The Complete Journey" and listening to certain pieces of developer's commentary would be a good move. The guy singing the "huzzah" song at the start of each chapter is Poki, the main guy behind the game. And in his commentary, he sang a couple of times as well. Some real bangers there. I hate stories that lecture the audience. The last Deponia game is all about that. They wrote an ending that followed the logic of the story, the audience didn't like it and asks for a different ending, writer is annoyed. Understandable, but never pull a Joker 2.

For every Barotrauma, there's a Gollum.
I've always had a soft spot for Daedalic. They put out some point and clicks I've played before like Edna & Harvey, A New Beginning and even Zanzarah back in the day. They really did miscalculate to such a bad degree with Gollum, seems they're a publisher only company now going forward.
