European wildcats are pretty adorable, though they're very fierce too, being essentially the 'bigger other brother' to domestic cats that aren't their direct ancestors from Africa and the Near East. Their main threats are hybridisation with domestics - they're so closely related that combinations between the two species produce fertile hybrids that further dilute the wildcat's gene pool - but also because there's a lot of idiots out there who think that this cat-sized cat will kill their livestock. Dumbasses like them are the reason why reintroduction projects around here struggle to get off the ground so often; the animals are released and live in the wild just fine, but end up getting poisoned or shot, ruining the whole thing
