Looks cursed, but it really isn't. Back in the Victorian era photographies required people to keep still for some minutes, and with babies this was difficutl - so mothers hidden themselves as drapes/chairs in order to hold the baby still and comfortable. If you see a baby pic from this era without the looming figure behind, it most likely is a postmorten portrait - a photo of a dead baby, that naturally doesn't need the mother holding them.
