Back in the days before deodorant was invented everyone just stank so bad they all became noseblind to it. We no longer live in a stanky ass society. Why the fuck would we want to go back to that? sometimes things have nothing to do with the patriarchy and everything to do with humans not wanting to wallow in their own filth no matter what gender they are.
 
Ahem. Never mind deodorant. Perfume (for both sexes) goes back to antiquity.

The Puritans were against it.

More accurately, peasants stank and nobility stank but they covered it up with expensive scents. So at some point the industrial revolution and improvements in shipping made expensive scents and soap more available and hot water bathing not a huge pain in the ass so it became a competitive advantage when selecting a mate to make yourself seem higher class and not smell like shit and even poor people started to do it. Outside of getting with dirty hippies smelling like shit is not advantageous (and even they cover up their unwashed asses with patchouli) and so no one is going to do it.
