nah, not a new York rat at all. that's a gambian pouched rat, they're naturally huge. they can store food in their cheeks like hamsters and have very poor eyesight, but excellent sense of smell.

they're actually fairly intelligent and an African startup is training them to be able to detect landmines since they're cheaper to train than regular dogs, there's also some trials to see if they can be used to detect tuberculosis by smell

That particular image may not be from NYC, but there are definitely rats near to or that size there.
