So I don't think it's inaccurate, even if she was bullshitting about having play time with the release version. It will surprise absolutely no one here to learn that the she/her that created the poll was actually a him, but is a she online.


One of the admins, Xananax (he/him) appealed for calm and admits this shouldn't have happened. This will be funny later.


Did I say later? I meant almost immediately as Xananax (he/him) quickly lost his cool. Calm and understanding is good, but disagree with him and you're shit.



And then the threat and bans start to appear.




But he's not mad.



Then the unthinkable happens. DusKitty, the she/her man that started all of this, lost admin privileges.

He takes it well, but the lefty discord members don't.

Thanks to @here/@everyone, moderation bots, ban waves for everything from third party client use to making the furry admins mad to not handing over your phone number (which drives away more normal users), and servers being branded as "official", Discord gives powermods and jannies plenty of tools they can use to feel powerful. One thing troons and Discord server admins have in common is they want to feel powerful somewhere to compensate for something while seeking attention. On Discord you can get the prestige of having a "official" server with the control of a clique server.

And then your "private" server is completely owned by a third party which is partly owned by China, which keeps permanent records of everything and sells it to god knows who, who can shut it down at any time for no fucking reason at all.

How the fuck is this popular? Why would anyone use this for anything official? It's absolute shit even for normal games uses, has an utterly shit client that includes an entire web browser. It's just maddening. People are fucking dumb.

I'm not surprised. IRC's image as a dying platform used by greybeards (that some trendy SanFran/PNW techies laugh at) is a repellent for troons who weren't around for IRC back in the day. Just like mailing lists, they're old yet work gets done because unwashed masses avoid them. In a way it's like the reverse of Eternal September, especially as IRC chatboxes died and Mibbit got blocked by most IRC networks.

See it all goes back to 2015-16 when Skype was turning to shit post MS buyout. Skype began forcing people onto newer versions of the client and into having a Microsoft account and bugs began to crop up with groups and voice calls. At the same time that's when Discord began being marketed thanks to big YouTubers using it and marketing that directly went after a pissed off Skype userbase.

People were fed up with Skype changes and Discord directly went after Skype's userbase. First Discord was designed so you could use their service in any old web browser, and many early Discord groups would even let you join without an account (and make one later). Along with the slogan "It's time to ditch Skype and TeamSpeak", Discord began to add in Skype's popular features essentially ensuring that Skype's disaffected userbase would have a new home. From around 2016 to early 2017, Discord was seen as the coolest chat software online and you weren't cool if you didn't use it (or you still used Skype).

Then the problems began to pile up. Discord began to have server outages. Discord began banning people left and right and nuking controversial servers. Discord's client got increasingly buggy and became a resource hog...and if you used a third party client like Ripcord you'd be banned too. Discord really is Skype 2.0 in all the wrong ways at this point, and just like Skype during it's downfall people are going to stick with what they know.

Riot/Matrix really the closest mainstream competitor (paid shit like Slack doesn't count) and it has the advantages of being FOSS and federated. Despite that it has it's issues with the main one being that the python based synapse homeserver is a bitch to host as the KF riot has shown.

That's a feature, not a bug.

Discord's client got increasingly buggy and became a resource hog...and if you used a third party client like Ripcord you'd be banned too.

On the occasion when I'm forced to use Discord, I use Ripcord. No resource hogging, no bullshit, no Electron fuckery.

Even though Duskitty got lost admin powers, they have since been promoted to moderator. It's like other open source software projects where a clique of people who don't use the software or make meaningful contributions are trying to take control.

The CoC wasn't well received, but there wasn't a mod/admin tantrum like before.

Mods can't answer difficult questions.

Most of it wasn't worth screen capping. There was some I might cap later, like one mod saying that the CoC has been in the works for a year or more, and it's just a coincidence it appeared after a discord shitstorm.
