I disagree with presumption that anyone is actually looking up to video game characters. Also on the presumption that it isn't the inclusion of different sex/races that people mostly have a problem with, and instead that they mostly disagree with them being artificially inserted for marketing purposes, or more atrociously, changing a character's race/gender for no reason (besides marketing).

OP, do you know what site you’re posting this on? And if so, are you actually expecting this to go well?

Diversity is great. It keeps things from getting boring. Problem is, SJWs can't write diverse characters because they keep confusing personality with skin color or genitalia. In order to achieve what SoyLord here has pronounced in his tweets, Diversity has to be an organic phenomenon, not an ideological shoehorn.

That doesn't click with slacktivist fuckwits tho - it requires hard work, it requires a creative meritocracy (a big no-no these days, thanks to the way the Pareto principle divvies up actual skill and talent). These sorts don't care about blacks, women or fags. They care about themselves, and those groups they claim to champion are a handy excuse for why they're even standing on a soap box in the first place.

I think context matters. I have no problem playing a game as a black chick or whatever, but if said black chick exists solely to push some woke bullshit, it's going to cause the story to be meme worthy. The best examples I can think of would be Dorian compared to Krem in Dragon Age Inquisition. I saw almost no one bitching about Dorian despite him being very openly gay, but everyone hated Krem who was a tranny.

What I've always wondered though, is if the people saying/doing dumb shit like this are actually just entirely oblivious to the obvious, or if they're just feigning ignorance so they can be on the good goy side of a conflict they're manufacturing.

The problem is, you can only have certain non white straight male characters.
You'll NEVER get a transsexual who is a racist murdering rapist, they have to be shown in a positive light.
Also, how do you know how many characters are straight? Unless it's in the story, you don't know. Doomguy could be gay. Duke Nukem was definitely a closeted homosexual. Half the dudes from Mortal Kombat take it up the ass.

I want a game where you touch a black woman's hair without her consent and then compliment her on how articulate she is.

If you can't relate to someone outside of your gender, orientation or race you are slow minded and with very limited imagination, not surprised this "white savior" assholes have such a low opinion on minorities.

So furries have had representation on cartoons since the very begginning?

I can see where these people came from but that doesnt stop me from getting the wrong impression. Is good to give role models in media that children can relate to but these people tend to forget that relating to a character can happen if said character is not a carbon copy of the viewer; example being that I liked Toph and the Kyoshi Warriors on Avatar despite the fact that we dont share skintone, cultural background, wealth, position, capacity to bend earth or wield fans, etc. Besides, children watch T.V. but the role models they actually get to see in both the bad and the good, the ones they are expected to actually learn from, are their family and teachers, people that not very often followed the same route in life these hypothetical children might pursue.
Getting representation has never been the problem, is that it seems to come solely with the interest of appealing to a new demographic than actually creating flesh-out characters. We can even argue that nobody has ever made characters, specially for cartoons, without the intend of appealing to sell merchandise but that is besides the point. You dont get shit if a diverse character actually has bussiness being in universe/is developed and grows organically within it.

But Im not saying here anything revolutionary. Im just repeating what plenty of people of all identities before me have been repeating for over six years.

I think I finally understand the core of what annoys me about white male virtue signalers. We've established that they're only doing this to be that person on the podium getting asspats, so this sorta behavior is essentially just self-aggrandizement with extra steps. The extra steps are there because the person in question (the word "man" does not apply here) is too cowardly/lazy to openly self-aggrandize effectively, and so decides to boost some marginal group as a smoke screen.

Thing is, he's not boosting that group. He's trivializing them by using them like objects.

It's just so slimy. No wonder I hate this shit.

Mass effect, but blue aliens are the negro stand-ins.

Low quality bait, 2/10

Be that as it may, I do think these threads can serve as constructive exercises for some folks on account it gives us an opportunity to practice finding the why of it all. Silly as it sounds, 'bait' threads have gone a long way towards helping me crystallize my own beliefs - by getting me to articulate them more than once, and in different circumstances.

The general consensus here seems to be: If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

If a character's race/gender/sexual orientation was already established, there's no need to change them.

If you're adding non-"straight white males" into a work, give them an actual personality, actual character, and actual relevance to the work, and don't just shoehorn them in for woke pandering.

Giving them some personality, character, and relevance shouldn't even be hard. Then again, some will likely not go with going beyond their comfort zone to make more than just some "generic hero" sort that tries to be tough while possibly having a sad backstory.

This guy gets it.

To recap, we need diversity in video games because.

1. There are already a "million different choices" in characters for "straight white dudes" to relate to and want to be.

2. There are billions of people in the world, and there exist groups of people other than "straight white dudes", so to complain about a character being a woman, person of color, or non-heterosexual is..."misplaced", to say the last. "Straight white dude" isn't the "default setting" for life in this world, after all.

3. If a character is not straight, white, or male, it doesn't (necessarily) detract from the gameplay, so it shouldn't matter.

4. If a character isn't straight, white, or male, then someone of similar characteristics to them will suddenly find someone to relate to, to look up to, to see themselves in.

5. Diversity in games doesn't impact gameplay, doesn't harm straight white dudes, and can potentially help others. If you still find a problem with that, then you're just an asshole.

QED

There is absolutely nothing wrong with fictional settings having a cast of only white characters when said works are made by white people themselves. That's like complaining that there is too much asian on japanese vidya or comics.

And if you care so much about racial and sexual diversity (which is pretty much what "diversity" is all about these days, personality and design is no longer relevant somehow), create your own media yourself instead of acting like a parasite on established franchises. I despise that preaching crap to earn brownie points on social media but disrespecting the old works because they werent "diverse" enough.

"As a straight white dude myself" my ass

don't forget media is global these days, and some ethnicities/countries are racist as fuck. but that never gets mentioned because only whites can be racist. what those woke warriors don't get is it's still a business, and with the way the different industries are going they desperately need the money from all those countries, more than the US actually (one of the reason hollywood is pandering to china so hard these days).

and that's on top the simple fact that certain types of protagonist simply can't work for a large audience or in [current year]. imagine a strong black women needing no man getting beat up or has any other kind of downfall in the second act to come back from in act 3. if you can't even do basic plot structure with certain characters without causing a screeching fit, why even bother in the first place?

The whole thing is further stupid considering that even if say you have some game feature say mostly Asian or Asian like characters, that doesn't mean that you can't have non-Asian voice actors. For example, would you ever think that Phil LaMarr of all people would voice a samurai? Well he did as the main protagonist in Samurai Jack. He's also voiced Ramza Beoulve of all people as well in the remake of Final Fantasy Tactics. In other words, while you can't visually have "representation" in games, that doesn't mean you can't obtain audibly. That's also discounting the fact that you could also have a diverse cast developing the game behind the scenes which is a whole other aspect that pisses me off. To use the original FFT as an example, if you were to seek a review of that game from SJWs who essentially require minorities must always be "represented" in games or else its racist, homophobic, etc. then they would have found that game as patently racist against non-white characters (never mind homophobic, transphobic, and anti-Semitic) as the only characters besides ones like Worker 8 and perhaps Rafa and Malah (who suck anyway) are "white". Well how exactly does the racist element workout when the vast majority of people who made that game were Japanese? Am I to understand then by the SJWs logic, that the folks in Square made a game prejudicial to themselves because they didn't have Asian characters in it? That's ridiculous. They made the game the way it is because they were interested in making a Western medieval fantasy, and there's nothing wrong with them doing so.
