Considering in the recent preview video nothing really looked out of place compared to previous games.
Unless the game has massively changed since the first trailer, no.

ShortFatOtaku quickly lists some of the bigger changes in his video about Netflix adaptations. (Timestamped to the relevant section)

In short, all the edgy humour and sex has been stripped from the game, which has been it's main selling point since 2.

Looking at the provided footage nothing really looks out of place from the previous ones. Maybe it's a bit toned down in terms of style from 3 or 4 but in all fairness 2 was pretty grounded as well.

8:20 11:38 Nothing says Saints Row like pride flags.

Also notice what's not shown. Any of the story content outside of carefully edited clips.

Edit: The lack of traffic at 4:05
Dude you had gay shit in the other games. I'm pretty sure 3 had gay shit out the wazoo because you could beat people with a sex toy while dressed naked.

Story content in a saint's game is a fool's errand, it went off the rails in 3 and 4 real quick because people were not playing for the story and they had a fucking quasi japanese mascot host just because.

I think Pride(Western and Japanese) would disown that since it's more of a bath salt rampage and not a sexual orientation.
I remember playing 3 and thinking it was one of the more LGB friendly games out there at the time. Like both male and female boss were treated the same nobody gave a shit or really remarked when you changed your sex midgame, you could cross dress right from the beginning and have a male voice in a female body and vice versa. You had an already very diverse cast of NPCs of all stripes.

Like all the elements were there. I think what people are thinking 5 is going to do is push those things front and center instead of keeping them in the background and are afraid that it might come off as pandering. But going by the gameplay footage it's not really that far off the mark on what's been established. The gameplay might not looka s exciting or interesting since this is a bit of a grounded reset since 3 and especially 4 jumped the shark in terms of normalcy. But it may be on par with Tomb Raider where it does some different things that the originals didn't do and at the end of the day they were still perfectly functional and fine games.

The big thing is going to be mission structure, if the side content is bland or dated that's going to cripple it more than anything.

the state of nu-Saints Row.png

Gamespot article is actually pretty damn negative on the game in spite of the headlines

I don't know why they didn't go the Saint's Row 4 route and continue escalating the absolute insanity. "hurr hurr dildo funie" doesn't pass as insanity these days. It barely even qualifies as off-color comedy. It's what middle aged accountants think is wacky. I jumped around the gameplay video for 5 and didn't see any content that wouldn't have looked out of place in early GTA titles.

4 put you in a simulation and basically told you to just completely fuck up everything you can in the most unrealistic way possible, which made it great. If I wanted an edgy urban warfare sim with a touch of raunchy comedy, I and everyone else would play GTA. You can't compete with that. I don't know what kind of absolute moron decided that trying to dethrone the king using an army of diversity hires was a good idea, but Volition (or whatever the hell they're called now) is probably going to go bankrupt from it.

Just Cause 4 was a better Saint's Row 5 than Saint's Row 5 will be.

I think it was Yahtzee that made a good point. Once you go to space, there's nowhere to really go from there without feeling like a downgrade. It was also pretty clear from the ending that they were done with Saints Row. They tried rebooting the series as a GIJoe style action game with Agent of Mayhem, but it sucked (it was also very woke).

If they absolutely had to continue the series, they should have embraced the ending of 4.
Wait, I'm using the spoiler tag to hide an actual spoiler? First time for everything.

Saints Row 4 ends with the reveal the Earth was blown up and there's no way to get it back, but the aliens did have a time machine. So credits roll over pictures of the Saints fucking around throughout history.

From that, they could've done an Assassins Creed send up with the Saints taking machine guns and dildo bats to some historical setting.

But what they should've done is leave Saints Row completely alone and made something else.

Well, Agents of Mayhem, but you already know how that went.

The sad reality is most (western) gaming studios don't have luxury like Blizzard, Riot and Ubisoft being able to make different games (genres/series).
For a few reasons like:
Devs move on whether they burn out of creativity and would like to make a different game, but fanbase demand or prefer devs making same game "again and again". Death of Runic Games, and smaller RTS game studios like Petroglyph and Eugen Systems.

Or you have like culture change overtime, like pretty much any AAA game studios right now and along with horrible from upper management. Like Bioware and Anthem, whatever happens with Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines 2, depends on people see Cyberpunk 2077.

Maybe combination with both above, some old devs may leave studio to make a new one or just retire. The old people that matter help/make series well aren't there anymore.

In before, Ubisoft open world games meme, they still at least have R6 Siege, For Honor, Just Dance, Riders Republic, Anno and Settlers. Maybe Homm

A couple of outstanding exceptions like:
Super Giant Games and Lucas Pope (Papers, Please and Return of Obra Dinn).

As in 3 and 4, which is the problem.
1 and 2 were over the top, but the world was relatively grounded and the characters took the world seriously.

3 and later had you fighting luchadores and aliens while making quips about how wacky and crazy it all is.

Plus, the nu Saints Row devs say they're intentionally making the new one with "modern sensibilities in mind"

Saints Row is nu-Saints Row, the article.

You can never please these people. The worst part is that they still think they’re bucking the elites in power when they are in power as it is with a game that will not even have the fun factor that SR2 and 3 had in its hey day. All of that identity politics nonsense in just smokescreen and mirrors to hide deficiencies in the game itself.

So, sorry if this is kinda off-topic - I'm well aware that you guys seem to be on a roll with the Saint's Row reboot that's kinda crapping all over the previous games - but I wanted to ask about another game and dev that I'm not sure I've seen on this thread yet - Guild Wars 2 and ANet.

Been seeing some shit bout the devs doing their best about shoving modern politics into GW2 in an effort to stay "relevant"; aside from the usual shoving of tranny and faggot characters into the game, I've also seen where the devs have apparently decided to shove Roe vs. Wade crap into their game - because abortion politics is really what's needed in a fantasy game. Was wanting to ask; I know these guys are kinda old news, but does anyone got any more recent dirt on these guys? Been trying to catch back up on them for a while, can't find much about them.

I feel like they needed the recognition of their most famous brand and this is a hail Mary to save the studio.
Agents of Mayhem was a pretty bad game and it's still canonically a SR game.

Honestly I don't think people realize that woke stuff has been slowly discarded for awhile now. Even large companies like State Farm and Walmart have decided to ditch products and these both happened within the same week.

The game is supposed to have a main campaign and then expansions like the previous ones. I think the fact that they made statements trying to correct misinterpretations of things shows they're at least paying attention. The only way to see if the care actually came through is to see the final product.

Compared to Agents of Mayhem it's a definite improvement.
