NEO: The World Ends With You has underperformed in sales, and it might not just have much to do with altering the dialogue to please Western audiences

Speaking to the HD Games sub-segment of their Digital Entertainment division, Square Enix Chief Account Officer Atsushi Matsuda noted that “while the HD Games sub-segment released such home console titles as ‘OUTRIDERS’, ‘NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…’, ‘NEO: The World Ends with You,’ and ‘Life is Strange: True Colors,’ its nets sales were lower than in the same period of the previous fiscal year, which had seen the release of ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ and ‘Marvel’s Avengers,’” – an unsurprising result given the absolutely massive popularity of FFVIIR alone.

Imagine having a Marvel game do better than you and you were released in the same way as NieR Replicant and LiS: True Colors.

There wasn't a whole lot to NEO and it was priced the same way as Kingdom hearts, Nier, and FF7R.

It should have probably been a very clearly marketed budget title because Trials of Mana was a budget title and that did a whole lot better. Many People thought it was going to be a Kingdom hearts styled game due to the similar artwork but word got around that it was nothing like KH and that helped sink it. Most people were exposed to the characters through the KH games rather than the DS original.

Square Enix games have a very high ceiling when it comes to full priced games, and Neo just wasn't at the heights that are expected of Square.

yeah, gotta press X here. give me the marvel numbers without the remake of one of the most popular FFs and then we might talk.
Nobody is losing their shit over Life is Strange kicking one of Nomura's babies right in the teeth.

I am very disappointed.

I mean I've yet to play an installment in the series where every waking moment wasn't like the demons of hell injecting the theme song to Dawson's Creek directly into your veins and how every minute feels like an hour and how every hour feels like a century.

BECAUSE WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT EVERY SINGLE FUCKING SMALL EVENT IN THE GAME AND CANNOT GIVE THE DIALOGUE TREE A REST.

Nomura got what he deserved.

So supposedly why Neptunia and Senran games are being made Sony exclusive is because they're apparently the only company who would openly back them and throw money their way. They apparently asked around and were turned down by everyone else.

Marvelous has a few things tied to the fate franchise that they're hoping to make serious bank on, the Fate remaster got delayed due to covid.

But yeah coomers whomst are expecting an unfettered era of cheap anime games from small publishers are in for a bumpy ride. Because all these smaller developers are not looking to make games and want to draw more revenue from merch and mobile freemium shit. They're also looking at television series deals which still puts them in Sony's territory since they now have the largest distribution channel for anime.

Case and point here's what Neptunia costs with the "premium" DLC. Mind you the DLC is all vanity level stuff, it's nothing anything substantial.

The games are just a vehicle for everything else, they're not the main focus. They're a front at this point.

and where are the proofs ?
Sony still has the most exclusivity deals with Japanese game developers, if you were to combine both Microsoft's and Nintendo's dealings they still outnumber them.

Nintendo never really has been willing to make exclusivity deals and it's always been to their detriment, some say arrogance, others say they don't need to because their IPs outsell any 3rd party attempt at the same genre. What's happening with the PS5 now, even though the price on the secondary market is inflated greatly, people are paying it. This has lead to the PS5 getting some very interesting physical editions for collectors/enthusiasts because they're willing to pay more. It may grow to a NEO GEO type situation where there's a ton of very exclusive titles with a high asking price. Some have already eclipsed the price for other physical editions like Gravity Rush.

So no proofs then
as usual
You can ask them yourself on social media if you're that curious. But CompileHeart, IdeaFactory, and Marvelous do not have any sort of deal similar with nintendo or microsoft, that's a fact.

But if you're doubting the PS5 collector's market, the fucking Shantae ports are all going for around $70-$90 as a base line and the system is already getting specialized simulation controllers for specific genres that run anywhere from $300-$500.

So the fact that Senran's creator just said fuck it and left Marvelous is just... what, nothing? Cool story, bro.

He never really got a handle on how to make a good game. The fact that they just had Compile Heart make the last one and it was more or less the same quality as the non-spinoffs showed that there was no thought really behind the series.

They didn't even bother programming the AI for stuff like Jet Girls and that's a pretty major oversight to have non-functioning AI for a racer. Marvelous itself was bought out by a Chinese company due to their financial situation, so there was more than just one bad decision that lead up to that.

Him trying to make it sound like he rage quit was no different than the shit Phil Fish pulled. Tamsoft itself has been working with Aqua Plus with the Utawererumono games and those just got a sequel announced as well as a new Anime series. Tamsoft would usually do the bulk of the stuff behind the senran games.

No we don't understand, the PS5 will do a miracle recovery without a a shadow of doubt, with all those upcoming nippon games yet to be announced, despite having the worst attach rate ever in game softwares in all PS & console history in the country of the rising sun. 988,400 PS5s (Digital Edition not included) for merely a total of 500k-550k PS5 game copies sold-through so far (RE:Village remains the highest-selling PS5 title with 73k), even the Xbox360 in its first year of existence did better in comparison (a total of 588,779 game copies for 290,467 hardware units sold in 2005-2006). Surely such an impressive first year necessary to build up an install base will have so many japanese games and exclusives in the next years !

Sarcasm aside, games aiming for a specific platform can also be because devs & publishers are believing where their main audiences are located, or because of hardware disparities among the competition (can't really expect the Switch to run high-demanding modern AAA games like a mainline RE for example). It's not always a matter of exclusivity deal with the console maker. In Japan, it's been a Nintendo/Playstation duality for a long time, and japanese third-parties went for PS as the default home because there were literally not much else to go to. Until a few years ago, that's it.

Also it looks like Marissa Moira is having a kick over diversity hire PR in a document from Nintendo like the mentally deranged Sony fanboy he is. It's funny considering he made several posts in the culture war thread saying the Bamco globohomo PR announcement was a nothingburger and still continues to deny/defend everything SIE California did so far in regard of recent events within Playstation.

Direct link of said document from Nintendo:
The company respects human rights in its recruitment process, selecting employees on the basis of their competence and skills regardless of gender, age, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity, conducts fair employee appraisal and treatment in accordance with the quality and quantity of skills demonstrated by employees, and helps employees demonstrate their skills even further.
The company does not have specific targets for the appointment of women, foreign nationals, and mid-careers to managerial positions. However, as a global company engaging in the entertainment business, which is characterized by increasingly diversifying customer needs and preferences, it is essential that we leverage the talents of a diverse workforce. Therefore, we are committed to respecting the personality and strengths of each and every employee, including employees from our overseas subsidiaries, and developing an environment where employees of diverse backgrounds can maximise their potential.
As part of these efforts, we are recruiting women and creating an environment in which women can build successful careers. We intend to increase the proportion of women in managerial positions from the current proportions in the Nintendo Group's principal offices globally (23.7% as of March 31, 2021) and Nintendo Co., Ltd in Japan (4.2% as of March 31, 2021).

Dude that's literally a bog standard diversity hire quota initiative. The Whole taking skills into it as a factor is what every other company has done since Affirmative Action became a thing. It's worded the exact same way even back when Microsoft wanted to clean up it's image and hire boatloads of indians. That's why pajeets get by with just a bullshit cert and then get thrown onto major projects and fuck shit up. They're not actually qualified in reality, they just meet the standards on paper.

The playstation 5 at this point had exceeded the lifetime sales of the Wii-U and the console is only a year old, and that was the last time we had a major console failure. The PS3 in it's first year only had around 4 million consoles sold. At this point any known marked points of failure have not been met. Nintendo would have killed for the Wii-U to sell as much as the PS5 did.

To get the playstation 5 to fail at this point would mean any and all sales of the consoles are artificially inflated and going by Sony's quarterly profits at this point they would have shifted into emergency mode like they did with the PS3 but have not. For this to be true that would mean 8 million+ PS5's are currently sitting with Scalpers and have not turned on and nobody is buying games for them. The system is going to be around for a long while it looks like, it's meeting or exceeding what the PS4 has done in certain areas. And this is even considering that there was no global launch of the PS4 because it launched in Japan very late compared to everywhere else, Japan was one of the last places to get it. The PS5 needs more supply than anything, because there's way more demand for the console that's not being met.

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have all been forced to reduced hardware output for quarter 1 of 2022 because parts have run out, but you're talking numbers like 20 million and reducing it by 2-4 million, there's going to be enough out there for an eventual saturation.
