Right, it was based on an Orson Scott Card series, but isn't Donald Mustard a Mormon too? However he wasn't the one known for making anti-gay comments, the controversy was because of the Card connection.

The thing is, at least back then people had a point.

Other M is a great example. Gamers got mad that they turned Samus into a weak, submissive waif that needs a man to tell her what to do. Not progs on Twitter, not game journos, but gamers, who got a bunch of shit from hipsters and journos because "Samus never had a personality before this.". Years later, the lead dev tried to pin the blame on misogynistic gamers, but people weren't having any of it.

Shadow Complex, even if you disagree with the boycott, was at least limited to people seeing something they didn't want to support and not supporting it. If Shadow Complex happened today, it would've been pulled from Xbox Live, everyone involved with the game blacklisted from the industry, and there'd be weeks of articles talking about how the "capital G Gamers" are at it again.

The earliest woke reviews were heavily downvoted and mocked (I've linked the Parasite Eve: The Third Birthday review from 2008 a few times).

It's true, this stuff started out a lot more reasonable, nobody was saying Shadow Complex should be banned, they were just saying why they personally didn't want to buy it, which is fair enough.

Read and weep this 2013 article about http://gameological.com/2013/06/foc-tennapel-armikrog/ about Doug Tennapel and be astonished at how far more fair minded and level headed it is than anything you see from gaming journalism today.

Something has just gone wrong with people's minds over the last 8 years, it's just been really bizarre and heart breaking to see.

It’s been said to death, but I can’t even call this projection. This is just sad, and at worse, pathetic. More often than not, this is just proof that TechTV would have been the superior channel.

Well of course you can't call it projection, a TV and a projector operate in different ways.

There's really no space for something like G4 in much the same way why people don't really give a shit about ESPN anymore. There's simply other better more efficient sources for gathering news and stuff and you don't need a dedicated TV channel to do it.

Hey guess what? Now even when the government does it it's not censorship anymore! NOW it's just "following regulations"...as long as it's only women being censored and not effeminate men as we can see from the ResetEra thread:

It's 2022 so nothing should surprise me at this point but it's still fucking weird that Nintendo is allowing borderline porn on the Switch and courting ecchi developers and Sony is shrieking and recoiling from cleavage like a vampire being exposed to sunlight.

Then again the biggest pussy chaser I know moved to LA and turned gay in like a month so maybe that's just what California does to a motherfucker.

To be fair the only people that have shrieked have been the manga authors who have had their doors kicked down by Japanese Swat teams who are now cracking down on illicit and questionable materials on a nationwide level. Nintendo isn't actively courting them so much so as they have not paid attention unless the game in question generated serious controversy like super seducer did and wound up being banned from their platforms. Besides Nintendo has real live Californians on their board of directors for their Hollywood movies.

The japanese are still in charge of Nintendo (NCL) and they remember games are for fun, not to be some sort of political statement or "interactive experience". And sensible enough to know that fictional characters are just a bunch of drawings and pixels.
