Surprisingly (or not) leeches have legit medicinal uses. They're used in skin grafts and reattachments in order to create and promote circulation so that the surgery is successful. It's creepy, but it works, and it's done in a sterile environment with sterile leeches, and medical professionals in case there's a problem where the bleeding doesn't stop.
Same with maggots. They seal them inside festering or necrotic wounds and let them go to work. They're extraordinarily effective at removing infected tissue without harming uninjured tissue. The maggots also secrete substances which have antimicrobial properties.

Okay so first, WHAT in the blue FUCK is that?

As for the other crunchy shit, the vaccine and homebirthing arguments are two of my favorites.

Now, overall, I don't give that much of a fuck about homebirthing, primarily because you have two types of homebirthers:

First you have the overall sensible women who are curious and want to try it: They and their baby have a clean bill of health from a doctor, they get a midwife or nurse to oversee it, and they're more than willing to go to the hospital if things start looking iffy, before or after the birth starts. They are flexible and not married to the idea of giving birth at home, and will prioritize their baby's health above anything else.

And then you have the crunchy moms.

The type that A) passive-aggressively (or outright) judge women who give birth in hospitals, or B) the kind that smugly ignore the various risks inherently associated with the practice, up to and including pre-existing health issues for both mother and baby.
And then you have the freebirthers or unattended birthers, who do it at home with just husband and family and maybe a friend - no doctor, no midwife, nobody except maybe a facebook group cheering them on.
Here's a lovely website!

I'm super glad my friend didn't get a home birth. Apparently, when I asked why she changed her mind about doing it at home, she said she couldn't find any local midwives so opted for the hospital.

Had no idea how risky it could be, but she had to be induced anyway, and wanted an epidural immediately lol. I can't imagine having a home birth.

I did follow a woman I went to high school with a while back, and eventually unfollowed her because she just seemed trashy to me. I bring her up though with a friend of mine (we all went to the same high school), and he said she's really weird. She still brestfeeds her child who is like 4 or 5 now, and the kid is no longer in day-care because they straight up told this chick that if she couldn't give her a bath regularly, they'd have to let her go. And... Yeah.

Crunchy moms are the worst.

Edit: Another woman I followed was just disgusting and trashy. Always overshared when her daughter had UTIs and the last one I remember reading about before I just unfriended her, was that she had to go to the hospital it got so bad.

Like, god damn....
probably the latest shit i’ve ever replied to, but fuck it the threads dead anyway so-
kids reallly shouldn’t be getting UTIs. the only people who really get em are women who are having sex, and much older, fragile people who are dehydrated etc.

if her daughter is regularly getting utis, she’s either absolutely filthy, nothing in the house including clothes is getting washed- but that’s still a bit much to cause a UTI-
the most likely case is the kid is being sexually abused.

a doctor would be looking for that straight away.
but fuck doctors amirite

I met a chunchy jew & didn't know where to discuss it but here. it was mega weird.

she went to the (functional) doctor constantly for nebulous health issues and did a ton of tests. she would get an MRI, and then ask people for "chelation protocols" for the contrast. she had to do a billion rounds of IVF to have a kid bc of age, which requires tons of hormonal drugs, but fears teflon pans and MMR shots and wheat. it was the weirdest combination of things. she also talked about either poop or pee every single time I spoke to her. she would hike a lot and have to bust out the epi pen if anything stung her. i could go on and on
