Korean developer Pearl Abyss is releasing their action open world adventure game on 3/19/26. The game was originally planned to be an MMO ala Black Desert Online, however, Pearl Abyss ultimately decided to make the game into a single player action game. Pearly Abyss is also utilizing their own in house engine over making yet another UE5 slop game with poor performance. They are touting impressive performance for what the game is offering.

Based on interviews with their head of marketing this game:

- Will not have any microtransactions **At launch**
- Is not a souls-like game
- Has a larger map than Red Dead Redemption 2
- Has one difficulty setting, but enemies will not scale based on player power
- Settings allow for adjusting the camera shake and particle effects.
- 3 total unique playable characters in the game

Unconfirmed rumors about the game:
- Depending on success, the devs may implement some sort of multiplayer feature (which could explain the "at launch" caveat for microtransactions)
- The game is said to be able to run native at 4k 60 FPS with an AMD 9070XT

There is no review embargo and Pearl Abyss is actually having a bunch of youtubers come in to have a hands on demo which we should be hearing about sometime next week. Pearl Abyss is seemingly insanely confident in this game.

I'm skeptical that this thing can hit 60 fps based on the trailers.

It's fucking gorgeous, the environments are absolutely massive and you can even have massive battles involving dozens of enemies at once.

I'm not saying the trailers are completely fake like The Day Before or launch Cyberpunk but it seems a little too good to be true.

My prediction is it will run like ass or their will be a substantial graphical downgrade to get this thing running on an average battlestation.

I'm conservatively optimistic about this game, it does kind of look too good to be true like how people are saying, the only thing that is kind of putting me off is that it's an open world game but not an rpg, meaning that there is really not much character progression (?), perhaps it's going to be like Zelda: BOTW (which I quickly got bored off) and also the 70$ price tag, but it does look very good and fun and I hope it actually is.

edit:
Also, they say no microtransactions when they already have microtransactions before the game even launches, you can only get these exclusive if you pay the extra 10$ for the deluxe edition,
and who knows if these items are only cosmetic or add gameplay features. I don't know, but I will not trust the words of a studio that the only game they made was an MMO.

Yea I am the same being cautiously optimistic. Looking forward to a few of the Youtubers I trust to put out their reviews. People that have played BDO can chime in, but I have heard from BDO players that the combat is fun. As far as performance goes, it does seem too good to be true that modest hardware will be able to get a decent experience, but it not being UE5 at least gives me some hope. I'd be most concerned about console performance though.

Looks kinda generic Witcher 3 copy. but hopefully will be good. Always nice that there's no niggers pushed into european settings.

Looks good, hope it will pick up some slack from the disappointments that were the latest Monster Hunter and Dragon's Dogma.

Also, what is it with Korea in the last years? They are becoming a second global cultural powerhouse next to Japan.

It was at the periphery of my gaming radar, but these overview videos really hyped me up. It became one of my most anticipated games, I'm especially intrigued by the deeply interactive combat system.
If it's even half as good as it seems, it's going to be a hit.

IDK but in recent years Korea and China definitely have been trying to imitate Japan insofar as vidja and anime (and vidja anime à la gacha) are concerned. Korea is getting closer to parity, China still has a ways to go.

but it not being UE5 at least give me some hope
I've been cautiously excited for the game every since finding that out, if it were UE5 I'd write all the good things off as the sort of fakery that Ubisoft pulls with its trailers.

The combination of people with ability and motivation to make good games, with the lack of corporations to choke down any competition (ironically the few fields in Korea that aren't dominated by megacorp).

The reason Japanese games are so shit is that if someone makes anything good then Nintendo will sue them via patents like claiming they invented the concept of stamina bars and mounted combat.

it's singeplayer black desert minus the shitty casino thing. they've been indev for eons.
i don't trust pearl abyss at all, remember their shitty pokémon esque game that has been indev forever? i do.

the only thing you can say it's good from that piece of shit company is the black desert's character customization and that's until you mod fallout4, it is staggeringly hard to not make a fucking gook in that game for most of the characters.

Pywell" is a dumb fuck name for an imaginary town and I hate the way the trailers are narrated.
If there is any black mark against the game right off the jump it is that the world and characters, as well as factions, seem intensely generic and uninspired. I cringe every time I hear "The Greymanes" as your player faction. It feels like knockoff Game of Thrones crap. I also wish there was full character customization, there will also apparently be no choices in questlines.

That being said, tentatively interested in this one. If the traversal and combat is good and the world is as fun to fuck around in as it appears, I think it will definitely be worth at least one solid playthrough.

Huh, we have a thread for this game now. I hope this game is serviceable.
Looking forward to a few of the Youtubers I trust to put out their reviews.
Any recommendations? Too much shit to sift through.

Yea. I don't expect this game to be some kind of masterclass in storytelling. Just needs to be serviceable enough as a vehicle for all the gameplay and features they have stuffed into the game. As long as the voice acting is done well and dialogue isn't turbo gay and cringe, I will be ok.

I think Luke Stephens isn't bad and I have agreed with most his opinions regarding the games we have both played. I might get shit for this but I also don't mind Skill Up reviews :story: Yea they are pretty gay and lame, but they are generally pretty fair and offer pretty on point critique even with games they like. They also won't blatantly shill shit even if its leftist propaganda. Their Dragon Age Veilguard review was very savage. Digital Foundry will also be a good place if you are specifically looking to breakdowns in performance and visual quality.

New Digital Foundry video talking about the games engine. Pearl Abyss recorded some footage for them demonstrating their tech. Runs at native 4k 60fps with a 7900xtx ultra settings.

I want it to be good cause I want western developers to get their shit pushed in

Buuuuuut I'm not holding my breath either. I think I've been following CD off and on since like 2019 or 2020. I feel like I knew about it during Covid at least. I feel like it was originally announced for PS4?

I also don't like how suddenly it had a bunch of Tears of the Kingdom shit in it in the last year or two. I wonder how much DNF esque feature creep caused this to take so long.

Also, aside from things such as mandated limited game time for minors with ID verifications systems (you need a KSSN to register for game accounts in Korea), the game industry does have a lot less restrictions there. Nexon has been fined numerous times for unethical game practices (namely overstating the odds of their Cube system in MapleStory), but since the fines are so small compared to their revenue, they have almost no incentive to ease-up on the heavy Pay-2-win shit they push in their games, and they do in ways that even Valve would only dream of coming close to doing.
