Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

We've gone from people buying up all sorts of collectables and plushies and whatever the fuck, to people buying up ART SUPPLIES AND COLORING BOOKS. Consoomerism has reached a new low. I didn't think this was possible, but it is.

Finally I know why I can't find any model paint the last 5 years outside reseller scalpers charging 8-20 dollars for 4 dollar paints. I mean there's some that are in stock but it's like inconsistent and they never have the fucking color I need tot he point I bough markers and shit to badly simulate transparent paint.

This isn't new. There is an entire ecosystem of art supplies, including novelty brands with ever rotating stock. It started with Arteza (even though they are almost established now and offer semi open stock). They get through the Youtube review cycle, just to end up in some haul videos and on "ColourTok" - whatever that is. It has already spawned the next step with the "overconsumption is ruining art/colouring/the world" videos.

I Made the mistake and bought some paints from one of these brands once after reading positive reviews. Ended up really liking them, especially when crafting with my nieces (higher quality than most brands for kids but still affordable). But when I wanted to replace them, they were already out of stock. Learned my lesson, now it is either children's craft paints or legacy brands.

If more people are using art supplies and creating instead of mindlessly collecting junk, I’m all for it, but it does seem strange to buy way more than you’ll ever use. It’s frustrating not knowing what’s a genuine review and what’s just sponsored, definitely some shoddy products out there eg those trendy acrylic paint markers only work for a day or two before clogging completely.

Am I overthinking this, or is this really just literally the same comic book over and over again with a different cover on each one? And aren't "Issue #1"'s only significant for a series that's, well, got more than one issue in it (which is never a guarantee for any modern comic)?
That's exactly what it is. Most people seem to be buying them for the cover art. My general feeling is that this is a retarded "investment", because the money shots are all knockoffs of Universal trademarks, and the sheer volume of covers makes it even more obvious that he's taking shortcuts and shooping CGI. If you just want low effort generic knockoff stuff, you could just turn to AI.

Back in the nineties they used to do this shit all the time with "limited edition" covers and "collector edition" issues trying to capitalize on the comic speculator craze of the day. It directly hastened the popping of that particular bubble by forcing comic shops to take in issues that they had no hope in hell of ever actually selling.

Gift shopping, 2025

a person who isn't being paid to advertise, speaking like they're advertising to you, is absolutely horrid and there are few speech patterns more unpleasant than that

speaking of which, here come the holidays, and with them i presume many many videos where people show off the "hauls" they got from places like temu and wish of things they plan on gifting their friends and family
because the only thing worse than being gifted a 1 dollar gimmicky plastic claw machine off a chinese excess website, is having that person brag on the internet about how little they cared when deciding to buy it for you

I'm a tourist to this thread but I have to correct this. They're 100% being paid to do this, one way or another. Their entire job as "influencers" is to sell things. Lifestyles, products, etc. They're either low key being paid for showing the things they do or fishing for sponsorships by seeming like someone who would be good to do it. Many of them are encouraged behind the scenes to lie about products if they don't personally like them. Because that is their job. They're paid advertisers.

This is also why some of them will act weird or do random things in their videos. Because they want people to comment and ask them about why they did X or Y. Comments drive engagement and engagement is attention = money.

They're vapid and they're dumb, but not necessarily for the reasons people think. It's business for them. Once you start to notice how they do it it's obvious everywhere. Like the product placements (that Bloom brand or something was/is? infamous for doing this.)

if you're a tourist you must not have seen the thing I'm referring to, but let me introduce you to the horror
there are absolutely people who have somehow learned to communicate on tiktok and have adopted that advertiser-y cadence to their speech, they think it's how you're supposed to talk, and they think all those advertisement videos are examples of how real human beings communicate and adopt those mannerisms and behaviors, including the advertisement-esque content as a trend, without ever being paid to do it

influencers ARE advertisers, but the kids (and unfortunately many adults too) who watch them and learned to talk and act from them are learning advertising speech as if it's natural and making similar videos

I wonder if YT is going to crack down this year on the more shady flavor of that -- teenage girls doing those "try-on hauls" featuring "barely there" swimwear or "sheer" nightwear. Or will they just keep letting that pedo bait carry on unabated? I can't believe they allow that shit to operate right out in the open like that.

They will never crack down on that. Everyone saw what happened to Tumblr and so long as Tiktok allows it it's here to stay.

I have never seen or heard of that before
I typed in, in YouTube search bar, - swimsuit try on, and it auto filled 1st suggestion to swimsuit try on haul middle school
That is fucked up

It's a rabbit hole. There's an endless supply of that shit and YT will cheerfully serve it up, no magic keywords required.

I saw a video saying the new thing to do online is to act like QVC/home shopping and bring on guests. I haven't really seen an actual video do it .... yet. But they're basically already there.

yknow its bamboozling how some people will bitch about "consumerism" and "objectification" like hippies and rally against things like old black friday (where at least the products sold were fucking useful) while consooming the latest wellness bullshit and lathering garbage oils & creams into their skin that people have done without for forever "for health". npc behavior, it's like the women getting botox and shit "oh it's for me" or "oh im a girl's girl" while bitching about how bad objectification used to be in the "bad old days". nigga please
