What I would give for a book about a woman who reads too many bad romance novels, starts to blur reality and fiction and eventually suffers from it.
Hold on....that exists already!
And it was probably a huge issue at the time, seeing how Flaubert only wrote thoroughly researched, mathematically thought-out books after that one he wanted to write ended badly received.

It's kinda funny how history is repeating itself. Shallow romances (in the original sense of the word) were popular among literate young women in Cervantes' time and inspired him to write Don Quixote as a response to those.
Ironically, while it was meant to mock the whole genre of knight-errantry, it may have ultimately turned out to be the only widely remembered novel of the genre, and while Quixote is clearly a lunatic, he is generally regarded as heroic despite that.
I'd compare it to Watchmen in that regard, a deconstruction and parody of capeshit that is itself a great work of capeshit, where the most insane character is also the only actual hero (Rorschach if it isn't obvious).
I cannot tell what is worse. The current rat race to purchase new video game consoles, that cause entire websites to crash, or the petty console wars of the late 2000s and early 2010s.

I guess... If the same patrician in question decides to sell one of his kidneys just to buy the latest Nvidia GPU, I'm not sure that makes him that much superior to the peasants.

The last Nvidia GPU I bought earned back three times its purchase value even underclocked and only mining ETH when otherwise unused, even counting the minor increase in electricity use. I'm fine mang.
(And no it wasn't the latest hugely overpriced card, just a mid-low card.)

At least there was actually a real dispute back then because consoles had exclusive games that were actually worth happening. Now consoles are just pure fighting over whose gay walled garden with exclusive overpriced globohomo propaganda is better.
Consoomers, especially reddit consoomers, are massive retards. I recently dealt with a business who went against consumer protections with my order. I was able to work things out and made the mistake of going to reddit to let them know their rights and that the company's policies go against consumer protections. I should have seen it coming, but everyone came to the defense of the company. Other posts have been about the same company failing to provide a service and again the replies are demanding the OP to stop attacking the company. Truly a brain rotted mindset.
I think there is a link between mass media consumerism and leftism or liberalism which is ofcourse ironic since the left are historically opposed to consumerism and see right wing capitalism as the promoters of such things. It goes as far back as the 1920s when Edward Barneys used sexual liberation to sell cigerrates to women. Those whose entire life is built around media consumption and fannbases are more likely to have been completely and successfully proggrammed by the social conditioning. If you grow up learninjgt from television, you eietehr become a leftist social liberal or a neoconservative economic liberal because those are the ideas that thbe entertainment media want you to believe.

i think the link is simply in whatever the current mainstream political leaning is
as long as your stance is the one touted by corporations, or rather you chose the stance touted by corporations, whichever came first chicken or the egg, either way people like that tend to latch onto those who say what they wanna hear or inversely the ideology that is advertised to them
i don't believe it's unique to any particular ideology, it's just a symptom of being a default person whos' entire worldview is store bought

While those console wars in the long run were retarded, most of the arguing was about what console was worth your time and money. Best advice given at those times was corporate loyalty is stupid and you should just get the console with the games you actually want to play. Now, people are rushing to buy without thinking if they even want it.
a large aspect of console wars was also shitposting
people pretending to hold a strong opinion, people who legitimately liked one company more speaking hyperbolically like it's the best thing ever just for the meme, and even people who don't own a single console just chiming in for fun
an imagine of that one anon who started a console war thread on /v/ and posted an image of an xbox wojak, then went "oops wrong image" and posted a pic of a sony wojak, comes to mind - sometimes it's the same person on 'both sides' just pissing around
people like picking a random side and fighting about it either for a laugh or because they genuinely attached to it without even being involved
Just like pepsi vs coke or Burger King vs McDonald’s. The only consumer war that really affected anyone was apple vs Microsoft because people need a computer for work and using an OS that doesn’t fit your needs is annoying. And even then, they were all just marketing campaign practices, competition is generally a good thing that boosts sales, especially when it becomes a household subject.
