You can get a very, very well made, real leather bag that will last you a lifetime for significantly less and you don't have to spend thousands in advance on stuff you don't want for a chance to buy it. I hadn't set foot in a Best Buy for about five years until a couple months ago, and it was an entirely different arrangement than I remembered. The retail space (where people could walk around, look at things, and pick what they wanted) was halved compared to before, with the remaining space housing pretty much everything of any value. There were no checkout lanes, just a customer service desk where you'd take your low-value picks and tickets for high-value items, pay for everything up front, then wait for them to fetch it from the warehouse to bring it to you. Gone are the days you could stroll in and buy a shitty $300 flat panel TV by throwing it on a flatbed cart and going up front to the checkout.

Walmart's upping their game now too. They're not doing "pick ticket, pay, then collect merchandise" thing yet, but the variety of shit they're putting under lock-and-key even in upscale areas is insane. Cosmetics, dyes and shampoo/conditioners are all locked up now (it used to just be the popular nigger brands, but now it's pretty much everything), and beyond that they're also put up little displays hanging over each cosmetics aisle with cameras and motion sensors. The displays show what the cameras see, and whenever they detect someone in the aisle, they blink some really bright lights and make an obnoxious dinging sound to make sure you notice you're being recorded (whether they're recording or not is anybody's guess). It's obnoxious and you can hear it all over the store.

Theft, assault, robbery, burglary, etc. all get a pass unless it directly affects someone important (or a member of the LE apparatus).

And your point extends all the way up the chain, too. Cops are not obligated to intervene to stop crimes in progress or act afterward to apprehend or even identify the offender, or provide any kind of assistance or support to the victim. Investigators are not obligated to investigate crimes. Prosecutors are not obligated to prosecute crimes. Judges are not obligated to allow prosecutions to proceed (they have almost unlimited power to simply dismiss a case). Juries are not obligated to convict even when they believe the defendant is factually guilty (jury nullification). Judges are not obligated (with few exceptions) to dish out meaningful punishments even upon conviction (suspended sentences, probation, time served, etc.). Parole boards are not obligated to keep anyone in prison a day longer than their sentence requires. And high-ranking officials can always grant pardons.

And god help you if you defend yourself. The LE apparatus is also under no obligation to defend your rights either even in cases of obviously justified and obviously lawful self-defense (just ask Kyle Rittenhouse). "The process is the punishment" and all that.

America is one of the few nations in the world to have so-called "good Samaritan" laws that explicitly protect people in situations where they're clearly trying (in good faith) to help someone in danger and the person they save (or their family if they fail) tries to sue them. i.e. if you save someone's life by performing CPR, by definition you've also just deliberately broken most of the ribs in their chest (because that's how CPR works) so without those laws in place to protect you, the ingrate you saved can try to come after you for costs and "pain and suffering."

Not every state has laws like that, and that doesn't even stop assholes from suing anyway. It also doesn't stop wily prosecutors from getting creative if they don't like the Samaritan for some reason.

But we're effectively approaching the point of "don't help anyone unless there's something in it for you" as it is. For one thing, most people can't afford to in the first place. For another, we're all collectively learning that decent people are taken advantage of (endlessly) by less decent people.
