I kept a few favorite toys from my childhood in my closet, but I don't have them out in a toy basket ready to play with like I am still 5. Similarly, my father bought a single classic erector set toy like the type he had in the 50s, but again, it's up in his hallway closet and not a pseudo-shrine in the living room. There is a healthy kind of nostalgia, and there are also weirdos like women with houses that are nothing but dolls in every room - I have actually encountered weird women like this even in pre-internet days.
 
Checking in on my favorite consoomer, Nintendo Collecting, he's bought the Switch OLED despite having (at least) 5 switches, not to mention all the other shit he has.

In an update on his progress on expanding the "Nintendo Room" (here's my post about this) he's turned one of his NES controller tables into a bar table.

This is clearly the perfect location to get drunk with friends. Where you'd need to be super careful to not bump into something or else everything goes into chaos.

Just forget the fact that he'd probably freakout the moment a drunk guy accidentally touched one of his products in the Nintendo Hoard Room™.
at least making the table is already more effort than most consoomers, but also he's just making it for the sake of consoom so, eh.

Depends on if they actually read them. We've highlighted a few times the Book Consooming - Young Adult is especially notorious for it. Reading is fine - it's great. Recommend it! But having your shelves filled aesthetically with over a hundred books because uwu comfy cozy feeling of tea, blankets, and book uwu is stupid. Example:

All fucking YA in that bookshelf, arranged aesthetically, with multiple copies of Special Editions. If they read them all, good for them, but also why would you only read books meant for 18-20 year olds if you enjoy reading in general? Why not pick up books with challenging themes or-?

Oh, I see. Because she wants to be a librarian, so she only reads YA and is addicted to Tiktok. I guess reading anything with an emotional substance beyond a 4th grader's level is too hard and not consoomable enough. Too bad all those special editions and hardcovers are going to be worthless when she dies. But at least her bookshelves look "pretty".

EA knows exactly what they're doing with putting Cheeks on the cover, second time in 3 years no less (NHL 20 and now again for NHL 22).

Everyone despises the Maple Laffs, or at least their dogshit media, delusional fans and the constant barrage of "this is the year the Leafs are gonna win it all" at the start of the season. General opinions aside, they are the most valuable franchise in the NHL, and I'd wager a guess they're among the most well-known too. They have tons of die-hard fans that have stuck with a loser organisation for 54 years and counting. Now Matthews is an American-born legitimate superstar with an actual personality (how the hell are you gonna market Crosby in mid 2000s, or McDavid now?); he's friends with Justin Bieber and is regularly seen at UFC events, so chances are even non-hockey fans have at least seen him and his stupid 'stache at some point.

You have a high-profile American player playing in a high-profile Canadian market, EA is marketing to both countries at the same time with having him as the cover athlete.

In regards to the die-hard Leafs fans, were/are they as die-hard compared to Cubs fans, prior to them breaking their 108 (?) year World Series winless curse in 2016?

Even at 300$ base price is too expensive for a 5 year old console but this guy already bough 5 for fuck all reason and he might have payed scalper prices for this one too as the Switch seem to be gouged pretty badly by resellers right now. Videogames have really gotten insane, i also get why non-retarded Nintendo enjoyers hate this type of fans.

I am in the latter category, I didn't notice as it was happening, but sometime after gamergate alot of the old 'gamer culture' died and the fanbase started to be replaced with these kinds of people. It grew in the years afterwards (I also blame speedrunners, a phenomenon I have never liked) and exploded during Covid. A perfect storm of autism and consoomerism.

You should see what gaming conventions are like now. I stopped going to them awhile back when they started to become exceptional. Someone I know went to Too Many Games that just happened and it was full of furries and troons. He has more tolerance than I do, but he admits they are starting to become less and less fun every year.

I mean, most of these people don't even want to play half of the games they have. I remember back then when people cared more about quality than quantity in games.

I reminds me of this kickstarter for this one game that I knew about that had a collector's edition where you get a special silver cartridge or something and there were only a limited number for those who backed at that tier. Well, there was this guy complaining when the collector's editions sold out and I am just like "dude, do you even want to play the game or is it just going to collect dust unopened?" Most of these games will just sit there not being played and enjoyed like they are supposed to.

If you are going to have a large video game collection, you better play them.

All true, but I guess I was thinking more about when this metastasis of vidya fandom happened (and maybe is outside of the scope of this thread). It wasn't apparent to me until it was over. But as it relates to this thread, the same people are also, in addition to being much more likely to be exceptional, are also often huge consoomers (and often not just of vidya).

I never thought I'd miss when vidya fandom was mostly immature male, but here we are.

You can't possibly have time to leisurely browse that many, let alone remember half of them.... what was the point? It was the collecting, the having, not the actual liking or using.

Maple leaf fans are kind of special in that most of them will actively shit on the team after years and years of being the butt of most hockey jokes, even from non-hockey fans. I've yet to see any leafs fans actual defend the team as being secretly good, many are typically wondering why they're even still fans or when the team is actually going to get good. From fans of other teams they receive a good mix of ridicule and pity. Example of a well-known leafs fan who has been following the teams games since the start of his channel (probably even before) and has yet to see them actually win. Fair warning that he gets loud:

i don't know about gamergate . I think is just the natural consequence of a generation growing up since 80s worshipping the Nintendo brand, a subset of those 80s- 90s kids will never let go the obsession no matter how old they are and now they have disposable income and the ability to accrue debt so they go full retard child with money mode.

I don't think that would happen regardless. Modern consumerism has killed the "downflow", and there's a reason Nintendo keeps releasing new "ports" of its old games.
Heard a story once of some dumbass who went on one of those "Help the Africans build a school" projects and she was surprised when a kid came up and asked her to play on her phone. She was like "Oh we brought all these things!" and he was like "I don't care. Do you have Minecraft?" because he was already so used to other people's phones that the secondhand crap her team had brought was seen as an insult.
 
In my experience, kids don't care about old games too much. I have a friend who owns an arcade that is part of a game store and you will get families that bring in their kids sometimes and the kids have zero interest in the classic arcade games they like things like the basketball shoot and those interactive sort of arcade games that are not actually video games. To them, that's just old stuff with bad graphics. I know modern arcades that have nothing but new games like Dave and Buster's are almost all redemption.

Someone earlier mentioned barcades... that is just a return to where arcades were originally inside bars. ShowBiz Pizza was created by Nolan Bushnell specifically to cater to kids who before were having to go into bars to play games. There was some traction with arcade games in bars in a way there wasn't really anywhere else these days.

Obviously some kids are going to like old stuff, but modern children are very much victims of recentism.

I mean, I personally am more partial to things that I grew up with or have been made during my time as a kid. People generally resonate more with the time period they grew up in.

I'm not familiar with baseball so I can't personally comment on the Cubs, sorry. @Moguro Fukuzou and @TowinKarz did a solid job explaining and linking appropriate videos. Here's another fun example of a terminal Maple Leafs fan in pain:
