Usually because they’re making upwards of $150K, which begs the question “why does her family live there?”
 
The Bay Area real estate is fucking insane. So insane people are starting to move over the Altamont Pass to live in Mountain House, Tracy, or Stockton while commuting back to the Bay Area for work (which is just driving up the real estate in the Central Valley). This woman is most likely a stay at home mom of two young children, her husband probably works some mid-level tech job, they probably rent a “nice” 2 or 3 bed subdivision home, and they probably have two car leases of nice 2016+ cars. She’s only “surviving” on $2000 for expenses because of that. She’s comfortable, but definitely not luxurious. She probably still buys her kids nice first hand clothing at Target, herself some lululemon as a splurge, and affords her children extracurriculars like gym or ballet. They probably don’t save a dime, as they’re living (slightly) above their means to be comfortable.

That said I feel bad for you guys thinking shrimp and berries are luxuries. We grow a ton of food and are right next to the ocean, you can feed a family fresh high quality food without touching a can. They could live very well if they traded their car leases for cheap beaters and got a better deal on their rent, and the mom worked part time doing something.

Anything that's extremely perishable, not local, and out of season, will be high in price and should be first off the grocery list if you're struggling to get by. Berries aren't a luxury for you but you would probably stop buying, I don't know, bison if times got hard because you don't own a bison farm.

I’d absolutely stop buying those things if the price jacked up, I stopped buying steak for like 6 months for that reason. One of the perks of living in California is our produce is second only to Japan, and the seafood is cheap and nice too. A big bag of frozen shrimp or salmon is like $5-$10. I am slightly annoyed when I can’t get good avocados in the dead of winter. Berries are $5 for a big clamshell in winter and $2 in summer.
I guess my point was, good food is almost a given here, and her ridiculously misappropriated budget is going to her outsized rent and cars, and lifestyle stuff like brand clothes and experiences. I’d bet anything they take their family to Disneyland every two years and splurge on things like daily Starbucks and yoga class and weekly dates. She’s COMFORTABLE, as evidenced by a ridiculous $4,000 rent. That’s insane, you can get a 3-bed house for around $2000 just slightly outside the Bay Area, which is STILL jacked up because of the market right now.

I was gonna say at least it looks nice. I know I ranted about this once already, but things that aren't "real" bug me. They bugged me even as a kid when I saw things like the shoes below because it was just crap with an image from the film slapped on it, and it felt like an insult even to my child-brain.

I didn't want this shit. I wanted the things I saw in the movies. I still remember when the necklace below was released alongside the LotR films because it was the first time I saw merchandise from a film that actually looked like something nice to wear by itself.

You see, there are jobs that pay more in California, so you make more money, then you take that money and use it to pay rent on your apartment that costs more than it would in other places, so it's a good thing you live in California where you can make enough money to afford that apartment.

That, and the fundamentally weird concept of having slippers with a character's face in the middle of the brooch. The characters in movies, and people in real life, don't wear anything like that. It feels like a thing that comes from arrogant boomers that think kids are stupid and will buy anything with their favorite character's face on it.

I went on some USA house sale websites, and, it looks that purchasing homes in San Francisco costs more money than to rent.

Because of HOA fees in San Francisco, I think. A lot of them are very high, which I have not seen when I look on real estates, for other USA places. Other than this, the price is already quite high!

Partially because of that but it's mostly because real estate in America is predominantly owned by gigantic corporations who've realized that they can make way more money charging rent then selling houses. So they Hoover up all the real estate and land they can find and then dick people mega hard with what is effectively a system of company scrip. There's a reason the number one land owner in the USA is Bill Gates.

I don't know if most homes are owned by corporations yet, but it's becoming that way. Home ownership is pretty out of reach for the average person now, and the only people who will probably be able to own in the future are the small upper-middle class and wealthy, everyone else will only be able to rent in perpetuity. The metro area I live in used to be very affordable, but now it's basically become LA price-wise. I've heard stories of people in older apartment complexes near me having to move out to the exurbs because the landlords are jacking the rent up like $900 more a month, and who can afford that kind of increase?

The left wanted us to become more like Europe, and that's just going oh so well!
