“It was not just about the physical border between US and Mexico; it’s about the borders we put up between each other. These fake ideologies, like I’m left and you’re right,” 31-year-old Esquivel tells me. “These fake borderlines that are man-made concepts and even things that we divide between like gender and stuff like that. It seems like a lot of folks are benefitting from drawing these imaginary lines between each other.”
Surprised no one’s mentioned how hilariously untrue the title and opening statement are. How the fuck is a comic where the author’s self insert whiter than snow Gary Stu complain how he thinks the entire state of Arizona is racist, gets reasssured by the token black chick that he’s 300% Mexican despite being mixed, and gets to knock out a Nazi with ease not “benefitting from drawing imaginary lines”? How is that anything but the “fake ideologies” he claims this comic is against? You can’t claim something his about healing tensions or building bridges when you’re throwing poorly made moloktov cocktails over to one half of the bridge.

Also loling at this part for the same reason. How is shit like the “You’re 300%” scene and that whole montage of monsters not more preachy on the nose “woke” bullshit? Is the comic in his head just way different from the one we actually got?
Esquivel pulled from his own background and personal experiences growing up in Arizona. “I wanted to be one of the cool kids,” he adds. “I had the opportunity now as a writer, to sit down and create the book that I wanted when I was a kid. And the fact that it isn’t super after school special political, it’s an adventure story with monsters and it takes place in the American Southwest on the border, I think that’s what’s making it pop. People don’t want to be preached to, but they’ll read an exciting adventure story.”

And then the real kicker is that his last statement shows his real intent, which seems to be the real goal of the current SJW comic infestation. He’s not interested in comics as a medium, he just sees them a stepping stone to getting his shit peddled to Hollywood and get his foot in the door for TV writing:
I want to create characters that live on after me and I want to create properties that become adapted into TV shows and movies so that we get more Latinx actors and directors and writers and set dressers a job. I want there to be more colorful faces on things like DC’s TV app that they just debuted and the Justice League.
No wonder the layouts are so uninspired.

Since it's already political, the comic needs to add Elizabeth Warren to the main cast and have magic "It's okay to be white" posters that cause them to fall over in pain.

Border Town is written by a guy who grew up in Illinois and is of the Gabby Rivera "Don't call me no gringo, homes" type. Clearly American but tries extra hard to convince people, or themselves, that they're super ethnic.

If that dude lost weight, started lifting and fixed his haircut he'd be a chad. Too bad about the pop culture tattoos.

To veer wildly, horribly, possibly fatally :offtopic::offtopic::offtopic:....

Anyone else bothered by the fact that the name this faggot comic "pro" is besmirching was originally all about picking up chicks, 1950s style, with that Latin charm. The 1950s variant Even did the one name thing, a generation before Cher or Sting.

And since 'tis basically the season, why the hell not?

Makes you crave a martini, though, doesn't it?

I can buy him coming from a Latino family (He's Irish/Mexican) but I just had to look him up after seeing a page where he described the Aztecs as "bronzed bodies of human perfection so culturally and technologically advance that racist historians prefer to believe their marvels were the work of aliens" or something along those lines. Color me shocked it was someone who'd pass a paper bag test and came from a random northern state.

LOL. Dude acts like this theory only gets used with the Aztecs. It's also been "theorized" that aliens helped the Druids make Stonehenge, the Egyptians build the pyramids, and the inhabitants of Easter Island create those giant stone heads.

I've seen that idea pop up but what does "Bring back the New 52" even mean? I don't see how that jives with the notion that it's the same DCU as always, just everyone's heads were screwed with due to what's going in Doomsday Clock right now. I think there's miscommunication on what the New 52 actually was.

Do they mean "Bring back the New 52" in the stylistic sense rather than literally? I could see that happening despite how much it'd piss off their audience. As in that weird "90s Image" tone a bunch of series had during it.

I don't know either. New 52 was CRAP in the beginning. Reboot aside it reeked of the worst 90s cliches ranging from terrible art and stories, XTR3ME characters, and shitloads of cross-overs across many books. The only books I enjoyed from nu-52 were Azz Wonder Woman, and Demon Knights.

It's pretty clear that the idiots who wrote this fluff piece while fluffing the author themselves didn't read this shitty book. If they did, then they'd see that this is the most racist book out there besides Black. It actually advocates racism, but only if you're white. It also is the biggest case of oriental fetishism I've ever seen given how the writer clearly loved writing up the native americans. And lest I forget, yeah it rewards brown people who murder whitey with BS magic too.

If your shit is in Ollie's absolutely nobody else wanted it for any price.

The shear number of graphic novels on clearance at Ollie’s tells me the bookstores are paring down their Western Comics shelves and not restocking them. Figure Barnes and Noble has had enough of $30 shelf warmers, when they can’t restock the lower price point Manga fast enough. This has been building for a few months. I noticed that 2nd and Charles is at capacity for Graphic Novels. A huge wave of DC New 52 drek hit Ollie’s a few months ago. Some of the stuff I saw at Ollie’s also seemingly put truth to the lie of how well these GN’s are doing through Schoolastic.

I always found their move from New 52 to Rebirth disingenuous. I remember Johns doing big interview about bringing back fun and all that charming stuff back while same week last issue of Darkseid War came out where he killed multiple characters in gory details.

Legion was supposed to return, but I think we still haven't seen them? JSA? Where is that new Shazam stuff? Oh, but Wally returned who had nothing to do, then got his heart destroyed and now is killed (or might be revealed as a serial killer who faked his own death?). It is not like something changed, they just never had any plans for Wally in the first place.

If New 52 was 11/10 as far as aping 90s goes then Rebirth is 9/10. You can revamp the line as many times as you want, as long as same people are charge similar shit will be produced.

What’s happened to the Legion really sucks. Back in its prime it had some of the best talents in comics working on it, and had great sales success. Now, it apparently can’t even keep an ongoing series. I know people who want to get into it, but can’t get over all the complex continuity DC has forced on the concept over the years.
