I offer this quote by C.S. Lewis in regards to what Bill Maher said:

As such, I don't put much stock in what Maher said. Escapist fiction, including comic books, fulfills a basic human need and there is no shame in indulging in it within reason.
I remember a fairly recent Adam Carolla podcast where he mentioned seeing Bill Maher at a social event. Even though Carolla doesn't have a beef with him he said Bill spent an inordinate amount of time at this thing stating how much he doesn't like kids.

This is probably the most impactful comic of my lifetime for the medium. (You could maybe argue watchmen or Maus)

For a time, this was the most popular book in the world.

Coming in with a “can you believe this shit?” based on contextless panels will do remarkably little to someone who has followed comics for any length of time.

Self-publishing is alive and well, and has renewed strength. That’s a call to make your own books, not shit on your ideological opponent.

Does Iron sights look good? No. Is it great? According to our posters, no. But it was paid for and shipped by independent creators and that’s pretty fucking exciting.

The twitter shriekers remind me of the oft removed beginning to “citizen in the republic” (the man in the arena speech by Teddy Roosevelt.

The poorest way to face life is to face it with a sneer, a cynical habit of thought and speech, a readiness to criticize work which the critic himself never tries to perform, an intellectual aloofness which will not accept contact with life's realities—all these are marks, not ... of superiority but of weakness.

Yep there is nothing that will get those LCS owners to pony up and by more of your unsellable shit than calling them Racists for not buying your unsellable shit. Unless they somehow manage to lure Neal Gaiman back for a solid run I rather suspect that the Vertigo imprint is once again doomed. Am I mistaken in hearing that that horrid looking Zoe Quinn/Asshole Boy book is seemingly very very limited print run and otherwise digital only?

I'm surprised it even actually came out at all. I guess Chelsea got her troon slave to do all the work.

The problem with some of the art in Iron Sights was not that it was black and white. It was that it looked like a storyboard.

And I fail to see what's so exciting about indie publishing. If this were 1968 and they were pedaling their comics to head shops in baby carriages, maybe it'd be exciting, but in this day and age when it's easier than ever?

Technically true, but far from impressive.

October 2018 - Issue 01 - additional shipments to stores

Or am I missing something, and they'll be some ginormous figure in November? I mean, 8k for issue 02 is early cancellation territory I'd think.
>has resonated so much that the first issue needed to be reprinted by DC Vertigo (a DC Comics imprint) in the last few years

:story: It's barely even monthS (plural) old today. And with a whopping 1500 extra #1 issues needed, and only 8000 of issue #2 shipped, it's not even outside the realm of possibility that a single organization made most of those sales.

Out of curiosity, I read the first issue of Border Town online.

How is Love and Rockets still the best comic by and about Mexicans after almost 40 years?

Border Town is written by a guy who grew up in Illinois and is of the Gabby Rivera "Don't call me no gringo, homes" type. Clearly American but tries extra hard to convince people, or themselves, that they're super ethnic.

Yeah, that's not going to increase orders. The specially damning part was Midtown Comics (the strongest comic shop chain in NY) having issue #1 at 50% before it even launched.
I think they got some pity sales from the first time around, but what I meant is more along the lines of preventing losses. Guessing purely from other comic trends I suspect issue 3 will lose around ~2000 sales and land around 6800 copies sold to shops. If they can prevent say 10% of those lost sales then the book stays above 7000 which they probably see as "successful". I don't think it will work and it's not a good long term strategy, but seems to be a common way of SJW "marketing" e.g. I'm a victim; pay me.

It's just badly written, it's explained better later in the article.
After the comic dropped, however, everything changed. Not only did Border Town sell out, but it became Vertigo’s first comic to go into reprint in five years, following in the footsteps of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Overture.

He looks like an enormous faggot. An insulting stereotype come to life. I mean the type who speaks with a lisp and prances instead of walks.

Why do people do this thing with the ears? If he drives over 50 in a convertible, do they whistle? Does he hang things on them when his hands are full? Does his dom attach reins to them and ride him around the room like a horse? Is he actually an engineer and wants to make sure he always has ball bearings on hand at all times in case of emergency? Or is he just really fucking starved for having people look at him, even if it's in confusion and disgust?

Probably because the Hernandez brothers didn't feel the need to use their work to compensate for their personal insecurities about their lack of connections to Hispanic culture?

It's clear from looking at the shit Gabby and Border Town Guy write that these people have pretty deep issues regarding their identities and lack of a connection to their heritage. They aren't really any different from the white people they love to demonize and they know it on some level. I believe that's what leads to embarrassing shit like Border Town (which reads like a white kid screaming "I AM LATINO PLEASE RECOGNIZE ME AND SAY I'M PART OF YOUR STRUGGLE") or Gabby's Dora the Explorer level Spanglish she shoves into her writing.

Just looked up his name, and our "professor" and "esteemed comics historian" might be nothing more than a blogger pretending to be a journalist, since all I could find were these.
His page on ScreentRant, home of the MovieBlob
The Multiverse, some online rag no one cares about.
A page on MuckRack. This one has some funny shit in here.
Some choice quotes:

What does it mean to be a journalist?
"I'll do you one better. Why does it mean to be a journalist?""

Who do you wish followed you?
"Some rich person who thought everything I said was brilliant and was willing to contribute to my Patreon."

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
"That only out-of-shape, sarcastic, alcoholic virgins write about comics. Some of us can't drink because of heart conditions."

This guy looks like Kevin Owens if Kevin Owens was a child molester. How old is this guy anyway?

I can buy him coming from a Latino family (He's Irish/Mexican) but I just had to look him up after seeing a page where he described the Aztecs as "bronzed bodies of human perfection so culturally and technologically advance that racist historians prefer to believe their marvels were the work of aliens" or something alomg those lines. Color me shocked it was someone who'd pass a paper bag test and came from a random northern state.

It's not an unheard of issue with the children of immigrants, mixed kids, and Latinos. Personally I think we promote the mentality when you get benefits for identifying as a minority and "Latinos" are grouped together as "magic brown ppl UwU" instead of a cultural thing, Latin America being home to multiple demographics.

You don't have to think hard to see how that would lead to cases like Eric here who would be called a white boy by other Mexicans, who are mostly "mestizo" and native, or Gabby being your average Amerimutt. No one wants to admit Uncle Sam is their real dad.
