There’s actually something refreshing about a comic cover that tries its hardest to sell the damn book. It’s been a long long time since we have seen it’s like.

Oh no, the comics often sold now try to do it; it's just that you catch whiff very quickly that it's going to be shit either due to it tracing old covers or being written by fucking idiots who only get hired because they will suck your dick for the delusion of power.

If they somehow convince the cover artist to do the insides ( I know), I'd buy it on the spot, shitty dialogue and all.

Those are Greg Land covers. Yeah they are eye catching. But he is rather infamous for quite literally simply tracing porn.

I've seen this comment paired with this panel a lot and i have to say 'meh', maybe Meyer hates his ex-wives, maybe he doesn't there isn't enough to go on. Instead I'll choose Occam's razor; this panel shows one of the most common detective backstory or character development tropes there are. The character has let his personal relationships slide due to the job and becomes bitter because they were 'married to the job'. Have people even seen detectives depicted in media before?

No I'm being serious, I was a doubter but the comic is just so tightly written, with a narrative that grips you and never lets go.

Nothing settles the stomach after getting shot like Fritos. Might as well get her some Mountain Dew too.

To be fair, my first thought after reading this was that I really wanted to know what he freaked out about. Were those cops the bad guys, or what? The writing’s not great, but after that 1 page I was at least engaged and interested to read more. More than I can say for the majority of modern comics.

I backed Iron Sights and I kind of enjoyed it. It was the graphic novel equivalent of a low budget action movie, with some goofy dialogue here and there, but overall it was a quick, fun read. The point is that you can't even say that about the vast majority of current comic books.

Meyer released a solid B-, which isn't that great, but when most of the pros are releasing D's and F's, it looks a whole lot better by comparison.

I backed Iron Sights and I kind of enjoyed it. It was the graphic novel equivalent of a low budget action movie, with some goofy dialogue here and there, but overall it was a quick, fun read. The point is that you can't even say that about the vast majority of current comic books.

Meyer released a solid B-, which isn't that great, but when most of the pros are releasing D's and F's, it looks a whole lot better by comparison.

These are pretty much my thoughts exactly. I enjoyed it, but it mostly strikes me as something my dad - who is around Zack’s age - would absolutely love if he read comics.

Canales’ art is fine for the material. It could really shine with a nice color job, but just as a proof of concept to show he can deliver his product it gets the job done.

The other thing that was pretty odd is that Ibai Canales's artwork got much better as the book progressed, to the point that the difference between the first 30 pages of the book and the last 30 pages is actually jarring. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but it was interesting to watch an artist evolve that much over the course of a single project.

Overall, it was a flawed but fun book. I'm sure people that the people who hate him are going to ruthlessly savage Jawbreakers next. But what that crew of pants-shitters don't understand, is that he doesn't have to be Grant Morrison to continue to be successful, he just has to continue to release fun books, and the people who like him are going to continue to overlook the flaws in his work.

Iron Sights was being made before JawBreakers LS, funded through Zack's Patreon money. It was also made in chronological order, so seeing the art improve over time should be normal. Out of the $119K, I think Canales got a $10K bonus for his work and the rest of the costs involved were for printing and shipping. I think Zack made around $100K out of it.

Agreed! It could have heavily benefited from a professional third person editor. Both art and writing. To smooth out a few rough patches. But for a small team indie book it was on the upper end of the scale. At least I didn’t want to hang myself after reading it. Unlike with that Chelsea Cain underaged Menstruation Monster abomination.

Is Iron Sights really that poor a writing job?

The problem is that it's all the equivalent of inside jokes. Zack did a video where he gave a "walkthrough" of the first bit of Iron Sights, and a lot of it is things he heard people say, or based on such-and-such a personality type he knew in the army, or things like that. It really brought the book to life hearing him talk along with it... but none of that life is in the book. When you read the book it just serves up a bunch of oddities, non sequiturs, and things that just don't ring true if you've never enlisted. That's why I didn't back Iron Sights.

Every month lots of good looking covers are released. And I'm not sure what Land tracing from porn has to do with it, it is not like only he does eye catching covers and If I'm not mistaken last two Domino covers were done by someone else.

I am convinced that it does suck on purpose, but you know that whole "pretending to be re-tarded" meme. For all Zack talks about comics with no audience, this is also a comic for no audience. The audience of people who appreciate the lower-class South Texas/Mexico border vibe (which I'll assume for argument that Zack is channeling), AND see a bit of themselves in whatever sort of blue-collar/ex-military outlook the comic's going for, AND have an affinity for intentionally trashy media, AND buy indie comics? That's got to be at least as narrow as the audience of soy-drenched male feminists who enjoy getting pegged by their wives' sons.

That said, I'm still looking forward to "Jawbreakers" which, as far as I can tell, has none of these problems.
