New York (CNN Business)Colt, the manufacturer of the AR-15 rifle, has announced it's exiting the consumer rifle market as demand for high-powered, semi-automatic guns wanes.

The consumer market for rifles has "experienced significant excess manufacturing capacity" and there's too much supply of AR-15 guns on the market to justify making more, the company said in a statement. Colt will still manufacture other consumer guns, including pistols and revolvers, and it will continue to expand its network of dealers.
Colt said its business remains healthy, buoyed by its numerous military and law enforcement contracts.
"Currently, these high-volume contracts are absorbing all of Colt's manufacturing capacity for rifles," the Connecticut-based company said.
Colt reaffirmed its support for the Second Amendment, but the company said that it is "good sense to follow consumer demand and to adjust as market dynamics change."
Several other companies make the AR-15-style guns, including Palmetto State Armory and Smith and Wesson. The type of firearm has come under scrutiny because it's the weapon of choice for mass shooters. The gunmen in the Aurora, Las Vegas and Dayton shootings, among many others, used AR-15-style weapons.
Large US retailers have stopped selling some semi-automatic rilfes in response to America's gun violence crisis.
Walmart (WMT) announced it will stop selling handguns and certain kinds of ammunition that can also be used in assault-style weapons. Dick's (DKS), one of the country's biggest gun retailers, has also publicly said it's considering stopping all gun sales.

Moden Colt ARs are nothing special, unless you REALLY want that pony stamp.

Old Colt ARs are of some value in some weird states like mass that have pre/post ban laws.

So it has almost nothing to do with "assault weapons" and mass shootings and has more to do with the fact that there are a fuck-ton of AR-15s on the market that are getting resold, but CNN inserted that shit anyways. There are some serious weasel words and terms in there, though, like "weapon of choice for mass shooters" and "gun violence crisis".

Also, "rilfes". Can CNN even proof-read?

Any mom n' pop CNC shop can pumpe these rifles out in decent numbers, so while AR-15 sales are good, it does not mean that Colt specifically is selling a lot of them.
Also, AR-15 fan boys are like PC gamers in the sense that they want to build their own machine. And much like PC gaming components, the parts for a AR-15 are inexpensive and easy to assemble. I imagine this is also cutting into Colt's market.

Watch the fucking progressive weirdos claim a victory over firearms and claim that Colt did this to please the LGBT2+ Community or whatever the fuck imaginary communities that are apparently oppressed.

Yeah, "AR-15s" are made by about half a zillion factories, Colt backing out won't put even the slightest bump in supply. There's no reason for anyone to give a shit, you still won't be able to swing a stick without hitting some edgelord who thinks having one of those shitty rifles makes him a badass. Actually, that's unfair of me, it's not that AR-15s are shit, but they were designed by committee for soldiers where things like the weight of the ammo you're carrying on your back for fifty miles should be given some priority. That makes them extremely sub-optimal for any other purpose; there is just no good scenario for a civilian where an AR-15 is a better choice to own than another gun. But they look cool and all military so people keep shelling out for them.

Okay real question here
I can see when a normal brand decides to go woke and fuck with their brand name for some gay reason.

But when you're a gun manufacturer (or a store) in the US, you've only really got two clients and it's the government and normal people (and I dunno maybe a few PMCs I guess). But why the fuck would you go woke and fuck over literally your customer base in the name of people who resent you for even existing. What are they trying to do there? They're not gonna get good boy points from anyone, they're just making themselves less money.

It's not like you're selling razors and you're alienating men. You're selling weapons that no one else will buy. How the fuck is this a good business move in any universe.

They aren’t going woke, it’s just that the market is extremely saturated and colt isn’t competitive.

Guess that's probably true, don't know what the market looks like but I sure as fuck don't trust the timing on all this. It's not like it's the first time something gun related tries to go woke, didn't Dick's Sporting Goods (or whatever gay name it is) go and say they wouldn't sell AR-15s as well a year or two ago after some dumb shooting.

I don't own an AR-15 and nor do I plan to. It's just a really basic semi-auto rifle. I can see why Colt would do this, and I think they should take the opportunity to make something new. Experiment a little. The pc gamer comparison mentioned above is really on point.

Wrong they're setting up the AR-15 Lite, a smaller AR-15 that's main feature is that it is more compact & it can fit in your pocket.
Armalite Rifle 15 Lite, I like it.

Colt is meh in the gun sphere anyway, I can't think of anything they're really popular for.

If I recall correctly Colt had a long standing contract with the government for small arms (AR15, 1911s, and full fledged service rifles like the OG M16 and its upgrades A1 through A4) that they lost a while back to some other companies that put in better bids. They've been hurting since. I know they have (or had?) some contract with the Marines and their Raider/Recon units for M45 1911's but that's a baby contract compared to the service rifle contract they used to have. That plus the fact there's a veritable ocean of AR15 and AR15 variants on the US gun market means they just aren't competitive enough. Especially since the fudds who may have grown up with a Colt 1911 from their grandpappy or gone into the jungle with an M16 won't bother with their AR line of rifles since they're, well, fudds.

TL;DR: Their loss. If you want an AR just build your own for cheaper. And unlike a lot of other things, you really can build your own with 80% lowers.

Honestly it's a saturated market and Colt has always been more about government contracts than civilian sales anyways.

But Colt if you're reading this: New Python/Anaconda pls. And don't cheap out, bring the full polished Royal Blue finishes.
