I also somewhat remember Sergals being a closed species at first, or at least that there were canon rules to creation, but I got the impression nobody gave a fuck because the creator was Japanese and didn't speak fluent English, so international fans just took the concept and ran with it.

Yeah I remember that as well; vore, rape, and weird tongue-clitori; I'm pretty sure the latter is still considered canon. Back then it was weird, sure, but that was also when Chakats were popular and loli was considered a fetish for normies so not that weird all things considered.

This could have been before the turn of the year or sometime closer to now, I've been searching for it and can't find it. It was about people who suck up an artists' new adoptables/closed species and collect them for no good reason, plus the regular inter-community slapfights and unpersoning. It's highly likely it was Adagio since the way the paragraph on her is written in the OP is what made me remember the post, but either I'm searching the wrong terms, the post was moved from FFG or I'm just retarded because I can't find it any more. If anyone knows the post I'm referring to then drop it here if it isn't already the Adagio part.

What confuses me about these things are not the people creating them - I respect the hustle - it's who would pay $1200 for the right to draw a sparkledog? What would you even do with it? Think what else you could do with $1200. Even if you don't spend it on, say, a games console with more games than you could ever play, or your first car, or a holiday, even if you were going to be a complete DA autismo trying to flex on other DA autismos, for $1200 you could design your own sparkledog, pay someone to animate a show about it, and get a one-of-a-kind statue of the thing, and probably have change left over. If you did that there's a small chance that someone outside a handful of DA tards would ever see it, too.

Someone who is young enough or low-functioning enough to think that $1200 is a reasonable price to pay for someone else's pixels is surely too young or low-functioning to have $1200 lying around anyway. It makes my brain throw a cog, it really does.

Oh it's 100% a wierd combination of shopping addiction, dick waving, and almost like... investment (and autism, LOTS of autism). A lot of the people who buy these things don't actually DO anything with them, it's all about chasing the high of having snagged that desirable design from a big name creator. The type who buy this shit generally have a toyhou.se account stuffed with hundreds of characters, and a lot of times there'll be just that single image without even having any story, info, anything filled out beyond that initial image. A lot of the time they don't AT ALL have the money to be making purchases like this, but they'll keep buying anyways. They'll sell last week's design to put a payment plan down on this week's, sell those 'co-own' rights, etc etc. It's very much a hoarding thing.

Of the people I knew who were into this (and trust me, they were ALL exceptional), you'd be amazed how they would beg, barter, and grift to get their hands on these things. They'll make friendships to try and get their hands on favors and freebies, make their own species hoping to hit it big as the hot new thing to fund their habit, etc etc. Most of the ones who are into the big expensive things are wildly irresponsible, I knew a trust fund kid who'd buy them for herself and her friends like candy, I knew an unemployed welfare queen with multiple kids who would brag about her latest acquisition in the same journal post as saying they were skipping meals and tens of thousands deep in credit card debt. They're all that particular flavor of overgrown woman child who lurks on DA trying to be queen bee to a clock of teenagers, surprising nobody.

Oh yeah, this is very much a thing. Dont remember any specifics but yeah, I've come across accounts on DA that will do like three doodles of vague horse/dog/cat mashups and then sell those as packaged up concept art/examples for someone to build a species around. They'd pump out hundreds of them, and it was clearly just someone who liked to doodle indeterminate creature mashups and figured out how to make mad bank off it.

A lot of this stuff reminds me of sites like Gaia, or those sites where people could breed pets that had weird markings. I remember some people would put in a lot of time and money for pixel art. One thing I don't get with these adoptables is that they have rare traits. That makes sense in a game where you make pets and there is a small chance that you'll get some rare pattern or color, but not with something that drawn. Like many have pointed out there is nothing stopping anyone for drawing their own super special sparkle dog with a rare hair style and ears.

This is going to be pretty autistic so bear with me.

Sergals were a big fad on 4chan's /tg/ board and the (notoriously furry) /tg/chan quest imageboard several years ago. They originated as just one of several weird bespoke fantasy species for an obscure fantasy universe called Vilous, and came in two variations based on their geographic location in the setting. Why they became popular and the universe itself didn't I'm not entirely sure, but other species such as "Nevreans" (bird-like creatures) never seemed to gain the memetic popularity that sergals did.

The Vilous universe does have a rather autistic biology for its species, and from what I understand the treatment of divergent fanworks used to be worse. There was a funny meme at the time where people would draw sergal-crossover art like Sergal-Ponies (MLP) or Sergal-Airplanes (airplane fandom) and put tongue-in-cheek identification numbers on them like how a VIN is stamped onto a car body. People would go around posting these being like "Ah yes, I own the 6969th Sergal Pony, look at its unique coloration!" It was a way of taunting the people proud of their "authentic" Sergal artwork.

Right now the fanworks policy is listed on the Vilous website with much fewer overtly onerous rules, but you can catch a few requests that signal how nasty the community is.
