That's the thing with Civvie's videos, though.

If it's a game Civvie has played a shitload of, or at least had an appreciation for before starting the channel, it's likely going to be a good video. Blood and Duke3D seemed to be staples for him, and for a more recent example Dusk completely sucked him in and you could see it in the videos.

If it's a game Civvie is clearly only playing for the sake of the channel, though? It's a crapshoot. If the game doesn't click, it'll be a whiny bitchfest. If he does enjoy the game, it'll be more entertaining but his commentary is still likely to be shallow.

Personally, I think he's stretching his gimmick thin already. But his channel is still growing, so what do I know.
He could review other games that he's familiar with, instead of becoming tired of reviewing obscure FPSes, his VB Wario Land video was pretty good imo.

There really isn't much to say about Chasm that hasn't already been said: came out same year as Quake, tries to do 3D but is more of a 2.5D kind of game ala the Build engine, it has a neat dismemberment system, and that's about it. It's a totally mediocre experience.
IIRC the demo(first few levels) for Chasm came out way earlier, then developer/publisher shit happened and it became a Quake 1 contemporary. It should never have launched that late.
If it was competing with Witchaven, another crummy 2.5D game, I think it would have stood out more and be remembered more fondly even though it is uninspired and mediocre as a game. Chasm being 2.5D polygonal game also had one huge upside, it was fast on a 486 and would have performed very nicely on even modest 1995 machines. I'm not a Chasm fanboy, I just think about that game every now and then.

Nail on the head here.

His videos where he gives a shit about the game because it was something he played a lot when he was younger are very good. The ones that his (((patrons))) are climbing over each other to recommend because lol jank are... tedious. He needs to take a page from best boy Sseth and go balls deep on a game before making a video about it, assuming he hasn't already done so. If he could put a video more frequently than once a quarter that'd be nice too.

Also, I bought a boxed version of Chasm at a grocery store back in the day along with Quest for Glory V and Realms of the Haunting (couldn't believe my luck) and I am still haunted by how shitty Chasm was. It literally made me nauseated for some reason and beyond some neat weather effects and the odd cool thing I was deeply confused by what the fuck I was playing.

Realms of the Haunting was so good though.

Awesome game. Such a unique experience. The mazes can go fuck themselves though, especially that piece of shit one near the end of the game with the dozen or so required collectibles hidden around it.
I don't remember why I didn't finish it after putting so much playtime into it but it sounds like the maze at the end would be the thing that made me decide to finish it later.

For those that aren't familiar with the game think of Uninvited(exactly like Shadowgate by the makers of Shadowgate but in a spooky mansion) except you can roam freely and soon you have a gun. A point-and-click (somewhat horror) FPS with a tiny dash of Myst was really something special.

I prefer Civvie made more Adventure game videos, his Scratches video is legitimately fantastic.
I still laugh at his Starship Titanic one. I'm glad that Douglas Adams with that and Clarke with Rama got to be in FMV point and click adventure games. It's a very 90s thing and wouldn't be made today which is sad.

Call it a christmas dick sucking but I wanna thank Civvie for his vids, if he does read the thread. I don't have the money for patreon but I've seen every vid at least 3 times for background noise and his recommendations of games like Nightmare Reaper have led me to countless hours of enjoyment.

If he does read the thread, I wanna post a bit for when he does Aliens Fireteam, since it's a better shooter than Colonial Marines. So Sega gave the project of ACM over to Gearbox who was working on Borderlands 2 and DNF, Gearbox took staffers from that protect to work on B2 and in the process, stalled on ACM. Sega came back, saw how it was in a bad state and needed a dev to do crunch work on it so it'd be ready to ship. Enter Timegate, Texas based developer who saw an opportunity and jumped for it. There were 2 conditions though, 1, Timegate would fund development out of their own pocket for 8 months and get paid by Sega with residuals at a later date. 2, Sega would not dump any more money into the project, so Timegate would have to spend money on everything there.
Timegate could afford this however, their shooter Section 8 had done pretty well for a mid level shooter and they had some cash stored up. Getting paid by Sega however, would be necessary for the company's future.
Timegate crunched and eventually got the game in a working state, they gave it back to Gearbox, who then handed it t Sega.

The game bombed, Sega took almost all money made, Gearbox survived through Borderlands 2, which means Timegate goes into bankruptcy. A lot of stories around ACM point the finger at Randy for how bad he is but almost none of them mentioned he basically killed a studio he worked with because he mismanaged so many things.
Before they went under, Timegate were good enough to move the Kohan 2 severs from Gamespy which had died about then to the local steam servers, kind of future proofing the game. Section 8 still runs on GFWL though, that shit is hard coded into the game.

Pro Section 8 when Civvie?

>But that's later, right now I'm editing a Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project video, finally, after a few setbacks that caused me to need to complete three playthroughs of it over the course of the last year.

> Roguelike elements

Pass, I'd rather have a game with an actual level design rather than a roulette wheel of whether I get OP enough weapons to finish the game, and also that it respects my time to not make me redo entire sections over and over to pad the gametime.
