I like Monolith but they weren't like ID or Raven Software. The total number of games they made that were good could be counted on one hand: Blood (which maybe doesn't count since it was started at 3D Realms/Apogee and worked on for 2 years before being transferred over), AVP 2, No One Lives Forever 1 and 2, Fear (which I feel is overrated), and Condemned: Criminal Origins. So that's 4-5 games...

Shogo wasn't bad when it was released! I never played the kitty pirate platformer but some people say it's good. edit: I did! The demo, can't remember anything about it though.

And for anyone that might have missed it, Monolith was developing a general 3d engine for microsoft as a part of their DirectX/Direct3D/anti opengl initiative. When MS dumped them(and Microsofts own 3d accelerator efforts) they kept building what would be called Lithtech and released... Shogo was pretty decent, Blood 2 was...

Monolith made a bunch of cool games FPS games as well as Claw, a great DOS platformer released the same year as Blood. On one hand yes the current Monolith dev team should be mocked for taking 8 fucking years to make what would at best be a mediocre licensed game, but at same time, wasting millions of dollars of WB’s money especially when the NOLF games are still in IP purgatory is pretty funny in a spiteful way.

I thought Shogo was fun because it hit me right in the giant robot autism and it's one of few games that got the scale decently well. The Quentin Tarantino blood fountains whenever you shot a human with a mecha-sized gun were also funny.

It wasn't a great game, or even a fantastically good one, but I liked it.

I actually really like Shogo, even with all the jank. It really captured the feeling of mecha anime well.

F.E.A.R. is one of my all time favorites, Condemned I regularly replay, Blood is also a great one, and while I don’t think NOLF quite holds up as well as I hoped it would (those stealth segments are an absolute chore), it also is a pretty good one (haven’t played NOLF 2 yet).

So yeah, I find myself lamenting the studio’s closure, even with everything that happened recently.

I have a lot of nostalgia for Shogo as it was bundled with a gaming magazine I had as a kid, back when getting games wad not that easy. Objectively it's a pretty meh game with some high points.

I watched his AVP 2 review. It was good. The only thing of note I disagree with is the Primal Hunt expansion being garbage. Yes, the single player campaign was not as good as the base campaign but it did add more multiplayer features including the ability to evolve into a Queen as the Alien and added the mechs for the Marines to ride in. So, it was not completely worthless and for $20 that's not bad.

He missed an opportunity to talk about the multiplayer and mod scene because -while niche- it had a dedicated following and had a lot of interesting shit.

Bit off-topic, but how is the AvP 2010 game?
It's from Rebellion, so it can't be total ass, but 2010 is in the fps dark age.

It's kind of mid. The single player was overall good with the Predator campaign being the best and kind of acting as an unofficial sequel to the AVP movie by bringing back Lance Henriksen as Peter Weyland. The multplayer sucked, didn't have dedicated servers on launch, was unbalanced and buggy as Hell.

It's alright, but the FOV is shit and you can tell it was ported from the 360 due to the controls.

You can really tell in the final boss fight in the Marine campaign against an android Lance Henriksen because there's plenty of waist-high boxes to duck behind to avoid getting shot by him... Except there's no crouch button. Making it so that the final fight is all about tanking shots and trying to dodge.

Even with that, I'd still recommend trying it if you decide to pirate it or pay $1 on Steam for it. It holds up really well graphically.

Brace for a new Civvie video soon, take a look at what just dropped. I know he covered both of these games many moons ago, but he'll probably still cover it for the sake of it.

Hexen+Heretic got a Nightdive remaster, complete with an alternative soundtrack, quality of life and weapon balancing (including a setting that makes the switch hunting far less autistic), two new episodes, multiplayer and co-op support, and overall cleaned up visuals. If you enjoy Doom but ever wondered "what if melee weapons and magic instead of guns", you will most likely enjoy these games.

Now to see if they blackwashed anything or added some cringy lesbian drama into the game like they did with System Shock

They what?

Watched Gmanshills's video on it, the changes to Hexen sound actually good. Maybe if I had grown up with it I wouldn't find it so annoying but the low-res switch hunting was so fucking tedious. Wonder if we'll get a Hexen 2 remaster and if God wills it, a third fucking Hexen because if there was ever a time it'd sell...

Oh boy, just noticed Civvie's Twitter bio now says "indefinite Twitter hiatus", with his Bluesky handle underneath.

Yeah, nah, I know I'm also an easily triggered bitch, but that's the archetypical last straw for me. Don't need to explain why. Farewell, covert faggot cultist, into the pile you go.

...also, given how he spoke about Hexen previously, you guys really believe he's gonna go through the remaster of that specifically?
