"Would you still associate with someone who waves the flag of the enemy in your midst if you could help it?"-Them, probably.
The Confederates were Americans. That was kind of the whole point of the Civil War. If they weren't, there would have been no justification for fighting against them.

Even though they lost, they did so with honor.

If Lincoln had had his way, this would have been the popular view to this day. Thanks to that douchebag John Wilkes Booth, though, he got killed and replaced with Andrew Johnson, an inept fool.

It's probably a good alternative history fiction where that dumb fuck missed his shot.

John Wilkes Booth is living proof that actors should never have been involved in politics

Everything from BLM to southern racism to the issues in the black community can all be traced back to the Lincoln assassination. If that never happened all the racial issues in America would've been solved by now.

I wasn't referring to the Confederate Flag specifically, but the general attitude of politics as cold civil war, where anything that signifies belonging to the other camp is effectively waving the flag of the enemy. Like posting a Breitbart article without immediately criticising it.

Not even close to being true. If his assassination never took place, America would have an African emperor by now and white people would be in the Afghan Kush plantations.

That's probably not quite the au fiction @AnOminous was thinking of. Hell though, I'd read it.

Baruch O'Bama, Emperor of Earth.

He's a quarter Irish, you know?

Most of why Reconstruction was so corrupt and incompetent was that without Lincoln, who wanted to move on without further retaliation, the Radical Republicans had both an obstacle removed and an excuse to be as fanatical as they wanted to be.

Andrew Johnson was left as an enfeebled President with no ability to moderate, and the result was the systematic looting of the South. John Wilkes Booth did no favors to the South by assassinating Lincoln.

Had Lincoln survived and had his way, Reconstruction would probably have consisted in actually rebuilding and welcoming back the South, not humiliating Southerners to the point they spent much of the next century seeking revenge.
