Chrono Trigger VS FF6

Chrono Trigger has more interesting mechanics, but I'm biased towards Secret of Mana.
 
Definitely Chrono Trigger. FFVI is a great game but Chrono Trigger is the complete package. The place where the two games are closest in terms of competition is the soundtrack. But all other aspects go to Chrono Trigger without much debate.

Play both if you have not.
 
My friends in school and I always had this debate; but it was a three-way fight between Secret of Mana, FF3/6, and Chrono Trigger (what we called the Holy Trinity). It's not that we didn't dislike one of the games, we just favored certain ones more. Objectively, I'll say Chrono Trigger is the better game; mainly because if you look at the progression of Final Fantasy, you'll notice that FF1 - FF5 were very similar in character and NPC design, with FF6 starting to break away, but still maintain the look with character sprites being contained via the older style. Where Chrono Trigger had sprites of various looks and sizes, introduced the idea of team-tech and New Game +; it's also one of the handful of SNES games that required special care to fit the entire game on the cartridge.

My order is Secret of Mana > Final Fantasy 3/6 > Chrono Trigger; I recognize that it's because I was young and this was the order in which I was exposed to them (the release order). But can also identify that Chrono Trigger is the superior game, with the superior music.
 
Chrono Trigger is the only (non-tactics) JRPG I've finished that held my interest the entire time. It's got something special to it for me. I tried FF6 a bit ages ago, but never got very far. If those pixel remasters ever come to Xbox I'll probably play them. Hard to find time to commit to long RPGs anymore.
 
Got late into the game since I emulated both. But between those two, definitely Chrono Trigger since I got much farther in that one and I love a well done time travel story. Now that I'm not a retard I should revisit both.

But the one closest to my heart is Super Mario RPG. My first RPG and an awesome little romp. Special mention also for Lufia 2, liked the puzzles spruced in there.

I mostly got my freak on with RPGs on the psx so I missed out on a ton of stuff on snes.
 
Both are peerless gems, but I really like Chrono Trigger's battle mechanics. The story is also really fun, when is time travel not? The Tech system seems like a precursor to Monolith Soft's later Xenoblade games. Which is fitting since it's my understanding that much of Monolith's staff used to work for Square... before the whole "Final Fantasy movie killed the company" thing. Crono is also a southpaw like Link so that seals it.

Most of the Monolith staff that founded the company worked on Xenogears, which was originally being considered for a Chrono Trigger sequel, and inspired a lot of FF7 since they were next door. The unused Chrono stuff was then used for Cross and a lot of the key staff on Xenogears left for Monolithsoft and then did Xenosaga. I believe the first draft for Xenogears was written before Trigger came out.

Anyway, I feel like Chrono Trigger is the distilled essence of the 90s JRPG. The story is good, but it doesn't take over the gameplay, and the actual gameplay is just really solid. Perhaps the closest to a 'perfect' JRPG of that era.
 
If its FF6 vs FF7 its 6 because Kefka is actually evil and Seppy just cries about his mother for 3 discs.

But since its FF6 VS The Best RPG on The SNES the answer is obvious. Chrono.
 
Chrono Trigger, great graphics for SNES (is there a better looking RPG), Akira Toriyama's artstyle, goat SNES music, lots of choices giving way to multiple endings, fairly short length so it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Gonna have to hand it to Chrono Trigger. We do not talk about Chrono Cross which is a sequel in name only.
 
Chrono Trigger, it's just more fun and has a snappier pace. FF6 barely sneaks into the top 5 JRPGs for SNES, it's good but overrated.

My top 5 nobody asked for:

Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG
Earthbound
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 6
