Chris Rock is teaming with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures for a fresh reimagining on the next Saw movie. The comedy multi-hyphenate has written a story which is being adapted by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, and Rock will also executive produce. Lionsgate has dated the film for an Oct. 23, 2020 release.

“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” said Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake. “Saw is one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all-time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”

“I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004,” said Rock. “I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”

“Chris wants to put his own spin on the Saw franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with 48 Hours. This new Saw is going to be an event film in the making for horror fans. It will have all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect directed by one of the masters of the craft, Darren Lynn Bousman. We can’t wait to get started,” said longtime series producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules.

A lot of black people making horror movies nowadays... Can't be as atrocious as Intruder seems to be.

All the white man has to do there is just SWAT them and movie done.
 
The most horrifying aspect of the SAW series is that it's a shambling, undying corpse.
 
I hope the main villain is called Nigsaw and his Trials are all based around being stereotypically black like not stealing an unattended bike.
 
I think there is plenty of torture porn already. Nobody ever liked a Saw movie unless they got a huge boner from seeing people thrown in needle pits and cutting their own limbs off. They're not scary or ever have been scary. It's just low grade Hollywood torture porn.

The first Saw movie was a legitimately good thriller. It's surprising because everyone pegs the series as torture porn, but that first one had an intense atmosphere without having to rely on gore. I haven't seen any of the sequels, but given the direction this series went a long, long time ago, I highly doubt this reboot will follow that same template as the original. At the same time, given what Saw is known for, it wouldn't be smart to try and make another suspense thriller that's low on blood.

The first one wasn't bad. I remember seeing it and liking it at the time.
Saw 2 is what got the series labeled as "torture porn" and started the downhill trend.
I think Saw 3 was the last one I ever watched.
 
I have seen all of the Saw movies to date. The later sequels are fucking hilarious.

Attaching an actual comedian to a series where I have enjoyed the unintentional comedy, however, may be a mistake. Unless Chris Rock pulls out a decent bad guy performance like Robin Williams was capable of doing - not outside of the realm of possibility, but I am not holding my breath on that one.

The Saw series is so fucking stupid and that's why I like it.
 
Bump for no reason.

The Cinema Snob pointed out at the beginning of his Saw review today that Spiral could be a Lethal Weapon 4 sequel where Chris Rock's detective is getting revenge for his father-in-law's death and now I can't unthink it, so I needed to post it here so it would bother you too.

Eh, the first Saw was an okay movie with a good thriller concept but it should've been a standalone movie and not a series.

If Chris Rock is trying to do a dark comedy reboot of Saw in the vein of Evil Dead II or Brain Dead, maybe it could work but overall I'm not optimistic.

At least it's not Jordan Peele
