China abandons Microsoft file format - There's someone out there (well 1.4 billion of them) who hates Windows 11 more than you

The Commerce Ministry’s latest export control documents were released using local WPS software instead of the US-developed Word

China has started replacing the US-developed and widely used Microsoft Word file format with a local alternative in official documents, according to the South China Morning Post. The shift comes as trade and technology tensions between Beijing and Washington continue to grow.

The Commerce Ministry’s announcement last week on rare earth export controls was released only in the local WPS format, a homegrown equivalent to Microsoft Office, the paper wrote on Monday. It was the first time the ministry’s documents could not be opened directly in Word or other US-made software.

China announced new restrictions last Thursday on exports of certain strategic minerals with both civilian and military uses, citing national security. The measures expand licensing requirements and follow similar steps earlier this year to tighten control over high-tech materials.

US President Donald Trump responded by threatening to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports and said Washington could restrict the export of “any and all critical software.”

In China, foreign software firms have been gradually retreating, like Adobe and Citrix (now Cloud Software). Microsoft has also closed its AI research lab in Shanghai and all its physical stores in mainland China.

In September, regulators reportedly ordered major Chinese companies to cancel testing and purchases of Nvidia’s AI chips. According to Financial Times, China’s chipmakers aim to triple the country’s total output of AI processors.

OOOOOR.... If you don't want to use MS Word... YOU can trust the old man here who has been using Open Office for over 15 years.

It simply works AND you can port your MS documents too.

30 + years ago I used MS works because it worked well. I also used the old MS publisher because it works well without the bloatware.

15 years ago I have and still do use Apache Open Office. I am however using/testing Libre Open Office before completely switching over. So far so good. Reason for the possible switch is that I don't think Apache Open Office is updating since 2024.

Nice, I hate it already.

You should absolutely not trust this man. OpenOffice is a broken, unreliable piece of shit. Just use Libre if you need an alternative.

I second support for libre office, used it for years works just as well as ms

Ah, yes. I too would like to go through life without a mouse.

Burn my corpse on the pyre of Lotus123
I worked for a huge organization in the 90's that chose to go with Applix over Word because they were convinced it would become the standard. They're probably all dead now. I was cool with since I was using Lotus at home (because it came with something I bought) and I barely had any concept of the internet.

Microsoft is dead. Thank the Jeet programmers Bill "I like them very young Mr. Epstein" Gates imported to save himself enough shekels to finance his own private sexescapades with underage girls.

Strange, theres a correlation between when Windows ran the world and when Microsoft was staffed with 99.99% white male programmers. Coincidence, right?

Who the hell is still using Word? In my experience business is mostly done on Google Docs these days. When I see a Word file I assume the creator is a greybeard inches from retirement.

I am surprised it took this long, honestly. Does China use homegrown operating systems too, or is Microsoft dominant there?

You must work in tech. In construction, it's the land of the tech illiterate who do not know what a jaypeg is, and a word document is newfangled and amazing. While some stuff goes through the cloud, Word documents on a mass email list is still everyone's go-to communication method since everyone will get it and it will work for everyone. Also is a lot less bandwidth heavy, which is great since most construction sites I have been on have bad cell signal and dodgy, overloaded wifi.

For their smartphones and cars, more and more are using a ripoff version of Android OS called Harmony OS. But due to Google restrictions on Android (or was it China that does it?), Harmony OS is pretty much a gimped and copycat version. And Apple phones are still more popular in China, to the point that even top CCP officials use iPhones and not Chinese-branded ones such as Huawei and Xiaomi, and they don't drive Chinese-made EVs either.

What industry do you work in? Hospitality? Most companies and probably every major company still use the Office suite.

Google docs is fine for a high school memo but lacks the breadth of functionality which is required when implemented across a large organisation.
