France’s anti-terror prosecutor has opened an investigation after a car carrying firearms and a gas canister rammed into a police van on the Champs-Élysées in central Paris.

The French interior minister, Gérard Collomb, said the driver of the car was killed in what he described as “an attempted attack” on a convoy of police vehicles on the avenue, the scene of two terror attacks in three months.

Police sources told French media the attacker was a 31-year-old French national from the Paris suburb of Argenteuil whose name was on a terror watchlist because of his known links with suspected extremists.

Collomb said arms and a gas canister were found in the car. Police sources said the weapons included handguns and an AK47 assault rifle. Bomb disposal experts were at the scene.

Collomb told reporters the attempted attack on security forces showed the terror threat was “still very high in our country” and justified extending to November the state of emergency France has been under since late 2015.

No other injuries, including to the police officers inside the van, were reported in the ramming, which a police source told BFM TV resembled a “kamikaze attack”.

Eric Favereau, a journalist with the newspaper Libération who was on a motorbike behind the convoy, said he saw the police vans at a standstill near the Grand Palais exhibition hall and a car blocking their path, followed by an explosion.

Faverau said he saw flames coming from the car and police smashing its windows and dragging the driver out. He said some police then fired on the man while others used fire extinguishers to put out the blaze.

Police cleared the area and cordoned off the Champs-Élysées, also closing a nearby metro station. The area, popular with tourists, has been on high security alert since a police officer was shot and killed on the Champs-Élysées in April.

Days before the first round of France’s presidential election, Karim Cheurfi, a convicted criminal who carried a note defending Islamic State, used a Kalashnikov rifle to kill the police officer before being shot dead himself.

France has been on its highest possible level of terror alert since the 2015 Charlie Hebdo and Paris attacks and the Nice truck attack of July 2016 that claimed nearly 230 lives. Thousands of troops and armed police have been deployed to guard tourist hotspots.

This struck me as very fortunate as well.

You load up a car with guns and bombs and then die en-route to the scene of the terror attack. Do you still get your 72 virgins in that case?

Only if the opponent driver isn't a woman. Islamists in Syria went nuts after hearing that Kurdish women returned fire - because getting killed by a woman doesn't gives you your ticket to martyrdom.

Lying down next to Zin is Khamlin, a comrade who was shot in Kobane and almost lost a leg. She’s recuperating so that she can get back to fighting as soon as she can walk: “They opened fire and I got shot in my thigh. I was bleeding heavily. I told my comrades to just take my gun and leave. But they showed extreme bravery, staying with me during an intense face-to-face battle with the enemy, and captured fifteen of them. When we wanted to execute them, they were crying because they said they did not want to be killed by women, as that would keep them from entering heaven. I said to them, ‘If you were killed by a man here, at the gate of your heaven there would have been a woman, who would then kill you again and send you to hell.’ We lined all of them against a wall and shot them dead one by one.”

Awwww yeah.

Edit: Maybe I should mention my deepest respect for these women. Semper Fi.

Aren't the UK and France sick of getting truck of peaced by now? i'm actually surprised that Germany isn't receiving peaceful gestures every half hour by the grateful foreigners they've let in by the droves.

The officer in the van was not killed. So I'm thinking no. No virgins for this guy. Unless police vans count as infidels.

I honestly don't have it in me anymore to care about France. Don't get me wrong, I am glad every innocent civilian is safe, but this country has an ego problem. It seems for the last decade or so it has the right to lecture every other nation about tolerance, civility, and how the French way of life is superior. Now that is all being put in jeopardy, and they won't confront it because they are scared of being seen as racists. If they don't care enough, why should I?

Can someone explain to me how dirt poor goat fucking peasants keep getting explosives and automatic weapons? I thought the vast majority of Europe had incredibly strict gun control and even wealthy well connected people had difficulty obtaining that shit.

I'm pretty sure the automatic weapons are generally funneled in by states like Iran and Saudi Arabia. Or just buy them legally in countries like the U.S. where it's easy to get them anyway for anyone. They often make their own IEDs, though, usually with shitty explosives like TATP that any moron can make (at a great risk of accidentally blowing themselves up). Online terrorists often spread manuals on how to make things like this, which are unfortunately more accurate than crap like the Anarchist's Cookbook. This guy apparently just used a gas canister, though.

Illegal firearms sales are at an all-time high in Europe. Automatic weapons and more are easy to get your hands on even in places like France or England, if you have any street smarts at all or just know a few villagers.

FOR FUCK'S SAKE, EUROPE
