Russia's RZhD rail giant has apologised to the owners of a cat who died after being thrown off a company train by a conductor in freezing temperatures.

"We sincerely regret that the cat Twix died", the state-owned RZhD said, vowing to change its regulations.

Footage earlier emerged apparently showing the ginger-and-white cat being unceremoniously dumped into the snow in Kirov, east of Moscow, on 11 January.

The train conductor is reported to have mistaken the male cat for a stray.

This happened after the feline escaped from its travel crate, and was spotted by passengers walking through a carriage.

When the episode came to light, hundreds of volunteers started searching the railway station area in Kirov.

The cat was eventually found dead on Saturday, and later identified by its owners.

Some reports say Twix died from an animal bite and frostbite.

Vast areas of Russia were hit by a cold spell at the time, with temperatures as low as -30C reported in Kirov.

More than 70,000 people have now signed a petition calling for a criminal investigation to be opened against the female conductor, after local authorities refused to do so.

A separate petition - signed by more than 200,000 - is asking for the female conductor, who has not been publicly identified, to be sacked.

One of Twix's owners told state media he intended to pursue the matter through the courts.

Thousands of people across Russia were following developments on a specially created social media channel.

Since Twix's death was confirmed, one user posted a painted image of the cat with angel's wings and a halo over its head.

On Saturday, the RZhD said it was already implementing changes that would prohibit company conductors from "disembarking animals from trains".

Instead, the company added, they would be handed to employees at railway stations, and animal protection groups would be called.

The RzhD has been forced on the defensive by the backlash, feeling the need to state on social media that its employees "treat animals with great attention and love, and take care of them in every possible way on the journey".

It said that railway workers had taken part in the search for Twix, and added that one of its subsidiaries was looking into establishing long-term links with organisations that help stray animals across Russia.

While this is rough and the cat should have been returned to it's travel crate.......

I personally HAVE wanted to eject a fake service animal from a plane a 35,000 feet, both cats and dogs, for being smelly, ill mannered, noisy and potential threats (I WILL NEVER fly on plane with a pittbull in the cabin)*

* Why not children? Because they can't be placed in the cargo area like a dog or cat is supposed to go.

Poor kitty. Freezing to death is a harsh way to go, especially when the poor thing had a family.

Give the conductor to the owners and let them do what they want with her

The Kirov authorities are faggots but the feds are investigating.

РЖД has vastly improved after the treacherous cockgobbler Yakunin got kicked out. Right after his appointment, the new guy (libshit WIkipedia says; he's under sanctions so I'm inclined to trust them on this) prevented the rape of the company by Yakunin's buddy Medvedev (still in his cockgobbler phase back then). He does smell of woke but he might've gotten better.

What the article omits is the cat had a ticket. It's the duty of a car conductor to know who and what travels in the car. If a passenger has a baby, or an animal, or a cargo place, she should know it. Feline supremacy aside, she should know what goes on in her fucking car.

I like trains. Suburban commuter train personnel can be shitty but I've never met a shitty [long-distance train] conductor, all have been good to awesome.

It wouldn't be okay if it was stray either. Even if you find them pests, it's a living creature that can feel pain and doesn't deserve to meet such a terrible fate. Hope Twix's family meets him again at the Rainbow Bridge. Poor baby. Beautiful cat too.

Sad it had to take a cat being murdered to implement that policy but I guess no one expected to need the rule.
Thrown into snow is how stray cats should be treated, at least.
No they shouldn't. Stray is different from feral, they can still be adopted and make great indoor pets. Plus, no animal deserves to suffer and be thrown away like trash.
Because strays are a pest
Keep saying that and you'll end up like Canada having to import rescue dogs from America bc we don't have enough puppies anymore.
Because they spray everywhere and its gross.
That is fixed by getting them neutered at the right age. Plus, this was a house cat and was probably fixed. The article said it was walking around a cabin, not walking around and spraying.

Look, I love cats. But even as an intractable cat sperg... service cat?? I have no idea what could even be said to convince anyone of the legitimacy of this claim. Peak clown world if an airline accepted this at face value. Surely this isn't a common occurrence, and you are just astonishingly unlucky to have a story where you were flying and got menaced by a fellow passenger's loud, smelly, aggressive, loose, ill-behaved "service cat?" I sincerely sympathize if you were stuck on a flight made even shittier than normal by a colossally inconsiderate mong, but the mental image is god damn hysterical.
