And apparently she named and loosely based the shirtless werewolf guy on one of her brothers. Yeah.

The Meyer family reunions must be quite interesting.

Well....lookie who's getting sued for honest-to-god plagerism? Miss Cassandra Clare sticks again, this time with actual profiting from the works of others!

http://www.courtneymilan.com/cc-complaint/1-main.pdf

here's the legal dossier, but in laymans terms, Clare just plain ol' took someone's work and published it as her own. Funny thing is, I had just seen her one of her new books on kindle and was wondering how her writing suddenly got better. Silly me thought she might have attended a writing seminar or something....

12. In 2006, PLAINTIFF was alerted by some of her distressed fans of the potential publication by CLARE of a work that incorporated PLAINTIFF’s Dark-Hunter Marks. PLAINTIFF demanded that the term “darkhunter” and the Dark-Hunter Marks be removed from CLARE’s work. CLARE removed the term “darkhunter” and the Dark-Hunter Marks from her work, substituting instead the term “shadowhunters” for her protagonist, but removing any reference to “hunter” (whether “shadow” or “dark”) from the title; the book was published in 2007 as “The Mortal Instruments, City of Bones.” Despite PLAINTIFF’s continuing protests and Case 3:16-cv-00191 Document 1 Filed 02/05/16 Page 4 of 29 PageID #: 4 5 continuous assurances from CLARE and CLARE’s publisher that she/they would not expand the use of the “shadowhunters” term or adopt it as a trademark, CLARE has persisted over time in expanding her use of the term “shadowhunters” from a mere description of her protagonists, first to a tag line on the cover of her works and eventually to a complete rebranding of her works so as to be confusingly similar to the Dark Hunter Series. CLARE’s works are now listed on CLARE’s website, “shadowhunters.com” under the category of “Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters” and include the series of “Mortal Instruments” novels along with “The Infernal Devices,” “The Dark Artifices,” “Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy,” “The Bane Chronicles,” “The Last Hours,” and “The Shadowhunter’s Codex”, each a “Shadowhunter Book” (and collectively, the “Shadowhunter Series”). 13. The Dark-Hunter Series and the Shadowhunter Series are so similar that CLARE’S own publisher mistakenly printed 100,000 copies of a Shadowhunter Book referencing the DarkHunter Mark on the cover. Upon written demand by PLAINTIFF, CLARE’s publisher destroyed tens of thousands of the Shadowhunter Book that contained PLAINTIFF’s Dark-Hunter Mark on its cover. Despite the destruction of tens of thousands of copies of this Shadowhunter Book, thousands of Shadowhunter Books including the Dark Hunter Marks on the cover have now been sold and substantial commercial confusion has resulted.

She literally just highlight/copypastes this other woman's work, changed the word "Dark" to "Shadow" and called it a day. Some tigers cows never change their stripes.

Wait... so did Clare actually write anything over the course of the past decade making her entire career been one long con of plagiarism? Or did she just outright steal the concept of Shadow Hunters from someone else and then write a terrible series around it?

That is a good question. I don't have the answer for it right now, but I'm going to make a tentative guess and say she's always been skating right on the edge of plagiarism, changing just enough that no one could really say anything, you know? She must have gotten lazy in the last few years. It sounds like everything from 2013 onwards has basically been this other woman's work.

Oh! I found an example. This is what clare does. Yeah, like I thought, she'll just make juuuuust enough changes for it to fly under the radar:

Original:
"The skin of his face had the sort of marvellous pale texture most men shave off when they rip the first razor blade through their stubble and the second upper dermis goes with it forever."

Cassandra Claire rephrased this line in Draco Dormiens, chapter 6:

"I'll be sorry when you start shaving," she said dreamily (she was quite lightheaded now), "I love that translucent quality your skin has, I always have. And when you rip that first razor through your stubble, that'll go with it forever." [4]

Notice how the first example not only describes how a character looks, it makes statement about loss of innocence/childishness when a boy becomes a man and how said character subverts it. Of course, Clare just takes the whole thing literally.....

She wrote it all. She hasn't done any line-to-line copying since her fanfic days. The charge was that her work was so close to someone else's as to result in confusion (particularly due to changes in the way her stuff's marketed bringing it closer to the other person's thing). It looks like kind of a borderline case. After all, you can't really copyright "people who defend humans from supernatural forces." But Clare's shift to referring to the series by the "Shadowhunters" title brings it much closer in branding to the "dark-hunters" series.

http://thecelebritycafe.com/2016/02/cassandra-clare-sued-copyright-infringement/
"The Dark-hunters and the Shadowhunters symbols are so identical that the publisher accidentally printed 100,000 copies of the Shadowhunter book with the Dark-hunter emblem on the cover"

The linked article above includes a link to some court documents describing the series' similarities, though I'm not sure if any of it really constitutes plagiarism per se.

Clare's attorneys have also claimed that at least some of the supposed similarities are made up.

http://www.thewrap.com/shadowhunter...-slapped-with-copyright-infringement-lawsuit/
For example, the lawsuit identifies a main character’s stepfather as her “best friend,” alleges that the term “daimons” appears in her books (the word is never used) and claims that one of her main characters is based on a Kenyon character whose similar attributes were first revealed some three years after Cassie had created and told the backstory of the relevant protagonist.

Cassandra Clare, 43, born Judith Rumelt and now fondly referred to by her detractors as Casserole Clam, is best known for writing a teen fantasy novel series called The Mortal Instruments. The first book was written in 2007, and since then she’s written 14 fucking books in the same universe and nothing else. They got made into a really unpopular flop of a movie in 2013, and then became an ABC Family show (called Shadowhunters) in 2016.
However, Clare is best known as a plagiarist, cyberbully, predator, and ogre.

As it so happens, Clare got her start as a Fanfiction writer around 2000-2001, writing 895,000 words of Harry Potter Draco/Ginny smut. (If you’re curious, part one of the fanfic “trilogy” is here). Keep in mind that this woman was in her early thirties while writing this.

Despite being one of the most popular authors in the Fanfiction community at the time, she quickly came under fire, getting herself banned and blacklisted due to plagiarism and bullying.
A good concise summary of the plagiarism story.
And here’s the full account with all the (quite frankly confusing) drama.
One section is definitely worth a read, though; it shows her borrowing lines from Buffy, Black Adder, Friends, and more without citations. She also steals large chunks of text and scenes from books.
c2674aac775c72b64c3df83cda494140.png

The scummiest part is that she primarily plagiarized from an out-of-print series, which she lied about getting permission for, so that nobody would find out.

Okay, but no big deal, since it’s just Fanfiction, right? Well, Casserole’s Harry Potter fic got big enough to land her a book deal. She directly turned the fic into The Mortal Instruments series, E.L. James style. Here are the main characters of The Mortal Instruments, Ginny/Clary and Draco/Jace.
28a1a26d1d52b03fdbae09e4ce224332.png
Ginny/Clary and Draco/Jace are gifted teens with magical abilities. They use their magic wands to fight magical creatures and stop an evil wizard named Voldemort/Valentine. And so on.

This article tries debunking the Harry Potter comparisons, but more importantly admits how a backstory Clare wrote for Draco was reused word-for-word to become the backstory of Jace. The character makes the same speech about their past in the books, movies, and now the show. So, there’s blatant recycling of entire scenes.

If this isn’t enough plagiarism for you, Casserole was recently sued by Sherrilyn Kenyon, the author of a series called Dark-Hunters. Kenyon’s series began in 2002, five years before Clare’s. This section of the lawsuit is seriously a fascinating read. Some of it’s a reach, but some is just uncanny…

HOW SHE'S CRAZY

This part is why I'd say she's a Lolcow rather than just a regular shitty person.
Although most of her drama is in the past, Casserole still chimps out all the time. And now that season 2 of the Shadowhunters show is about to begin, more is to be expected.

First off, she is a huge bully. Here is one account of her bullying (there are numerous). Some of the behaviors mentioned:
  • Internet stalking.
  • Obsessive wiki editing.
  • Using lawyers to threaten people into deleting stuff.
  • Using people’s IPs to call them and threaten them, or having the police threaten them.
  • Getting people to gang up/turn on her enemies.
  • Saying “Tell her that her parents should have aborted her.”
  • Calling someone’s university police to try and get them expelled during their exams.

And lately there’s:
  • Sending fans to attack the Shadowhunters writers and try to get them fired.
ee7c62cdb9eb8ce1149a92c889f8ce23.png

Following the backlash from this tweet, the showrunner passive aggressively spammed positive retweets and likes about the show and how it improved upon the books.
  • Openly shitting on the show.
e3ab421116761da51b14c68932540ab8.png

This refers to a plotline unique to the show. She even referenced her salt in her newest book; a character exclaims “it’s not an arranged marriage, that would be gross!”
Unfortunately, Clare forgot that she did actually make arranged marriage a thing in her books three years ago.
  • Blocking fans for not asspatting her.
There are numerous stories on Tumblr and Twitter of fans asking Clare legitimate questions, usually polite, and getting blocked.

Example of her typical brand of passive aggression:
(Referencing a character from the show)

What’s frustrating is that despite dissing the show, she’s more than happy to pretend to like and support it when a) it’s getting publicity or b) presents an opportunity to promote her new books. Despite barely being involved with the show’s creation, she always shows up at conventions and other appearances with the cast. After having called the show shite again and again.
Clare in 2014, pre-TV series: "I won’t answer questions about the gay characters’ sex lives because that is homophobic. They are not a fetish."
Clare in 2016, when the gays become the hottest TV couple: "I’m writing porn of their “first time”! (And monetizing it... For charity?)"

OTHER CRIMES

Here’s some other miscellaneous grievances people have with Clare:
  • Abusive relationship fetish. i.e. a black female character gets back together with her white male abuser. Tumblr loved that one.
  • Yaoi fetish. Wants Aragorn and Legolas to fuck.
  • Sucks at writing.
  • The main character is a self insert and it’s dumb. Clary = Clare, both are “gorgeous” redheads. Clary’s best friend/kinda boyfriend is a Jew named Simon Lewis, and Clare’s husband is a Jew named Josh Lewis.
  • The way she writes female characters indicates clear spitefulness towards attractive and sexually confident women.
  • Fat and ugly.
I want to end this on a high note, so here’s some examples of the cast and crew of her show dissing her.

Blatantly left out of the show's creative choices, and salty:

The showrunner shamelessly cropped her out of this group photo:

I know this op is fucking ridiculous, but I noticed that nobody's been able to find a comprehensive Cassandra Clare post with evidence anywhere, so that's what I went for.

We appreciate your effort.

I think I remember reading about this tugboat somewhere else. I think that she might have been discussed on an earlier iteration of /cow/, ironically enough.

Yeah, a lot of these bookworm autists have freaky incest fantasies, I will never understand it.

We actually do have a thread on her, but the OP isn't that great

My bad. I searched all variations of her name and no results came up, but now when I search I do see it. Feel free to merge or w/e.

This would be a good update of the OP tbh. This was quality, the original OP was difficult to understand

The original OP was powerlevelling garbage written by a ponyfucker with a grudge going back 13 years. That thread can just be trashed.

If anyone wants to take one for the team, there's this...

I personally couldn't make it past the two minute mark, or whenever it is she waddles out onto the stage. Though that approximation of male (Picoult's son I think?) is almost as cringe inducing. Got a vibe that Picoult herself was a bit on the embarrassed side to be there, though that might be wishful thinking. Possibly at a publisher's insistence? Maybe I'll revisit this one down the line.

I've actually read a few of the books, though not the fanfic. They're generic, predictable and altogether tedious. I think the most memorable bit of whichever book I read it in was the poetry at the start of each chapter by a notorious Victorian era bondage freak.

Hah, good for her for bashing that Dark hunters crap author. That cunt sued GW for naming a space marine chapter with the same generic name as "dark hunters."

How can she win that, and GW not the space marine lawsuit? I mean either both are wrong or right. If Gw can not copyright a generic sci fi term, why can she a generic edgelord term? Dark hunters is like one of the most cliched name for a group of evil stalking baddies. At least Tolkien had the class not to copyright "Rangers" .

So this fat cow at least did a little good!

Sherilynn Kenyon is part of a very crazy and litigious community. They refer to themselves as Romancelandia and those bitches are savage. Like, they stay mad. About everything. All the time.
