Are driving shoes just a meme or do they actually change the experience a lot? I usually like wearing flat soled shoes/sneakers like skate shoes or converse low tops. I find that gives me the most feeling of connectedness because they're like wearing rubber slippers where I get a better sensation in feeling connected to the car.

Unless you're getting paid to drive fast, they're basically foot fedoras for car dorks. I do notice a difference when I'm sporting skate shoes vs trainers, leather soled dress shoes or boots, but not enough in the daily grind to matter.

The exception is sandals. Sandals fucking suck so bad to drive with I kick them off into the passenger footwell and drive barefoot.

Meme + something for metrosexuals if they’re driving loafers. I have a pair of high top fire retardant driving shoes for track use and anything with a thin sole and a fairly narrow profile is basically the same thing from a driving perspective. The big difference between them and something like a converse sneaker is that it has a narrow and rounded profile for closely spaced pedals.

I'm kind of tall and all my sports cars have the tiniest pedal boxes. If I'm not driving to somewhere important I love using flip flops. My Walmart flip flops have worn into the shape of my pedals and it's nice when it grabs the clutch for me.

Btw, I tested a 2000s cobra and I could barely fit my size 14s in the pedal box. Is that car only for manlets?

I drive barefoot like god intended.

just got an '03 miata miracle as first (owned) car with 86k miles/138k km. still haven't driven it but a trusted friend has.
it's seemingly rare, 1.8l, 5sm, torsen diff, full optional except for the hardtop, apparently only available in germany (in other parts of europe the miracle was only sold until 2001), looks brand new, no rust, pretty cheap.
what am i in for?

Assuming everything is in working order, plenty of good times. Check the rubber bits (hoses/belts) to see if they need to be replaced and the top for leaks, but those things are reasonably bulletproof.

seriously hoping there's nothing wrong, but i trust my friend that got up there to test drive it, i've been told idle and revving are smooth, clutch feels solid, distribution is brand new, no noises/smells/leaks (although i know they can be masked), interior is mint.
i'll get it delivered next week.

the guy is a small dealer that mainly sells miatas and had some seriously nice one i missed (e.g a 2004, looked to be miracle spec too, 1.6 in merlot red with 80k km for around 6k€, would have been my primary choice). other than that it just passed the german tuv and the guy will drive it 600km to me so it acts a bit as guarantee that it's working more than fine.

belts should be good since it's something that gets inspected; the top is brand new, the first and last owner basically drove it always with it dropped.
i've read that clogged drains are the main source of rust, is it a hassle to check? any other pointer?

How long do you think I can drive on a slightly wiggly steering shaft?

No clunking yet, just steering wheel rattles over uneven surfaces. Steering is slightly looser than it used to be, not by a lot.

You got a rubber steering wheel shaft coupler? If you do and that breaks you will lose all steering. If not it could be tie rod ball joints rotted out. Best to replace soon.

As a follow up to changing my friends sparkplug on his 05 focus, helped him change his oil; nice Mobil One filter, all synthetic Castor oil, I've probably saved him a couple hundred at this point. And his car is easy to change. No panels to remove, filter and plug is nice and accessible; it's fun to work on

My work vehicle has had the worst luck ever regarding the tires. I have repaired minimum 5 tire punctures in the last 2 years on this vehicle. About 2 weeks ago I had a leak at the rim, impossible to seal as the rim was somewhat damaged, the other rim on the same side is equally as bad but miraculously still holds air. So I swapped for the spare and figured I'd be fine for a couple of weeks, I ordered 2 new rims which were surprisingly affordable. About 3 days ago I get a flat again on a different tire the messed up rim tire, this time in the sidewall. I'm about 30 miles from home and I don't have roadside assistance, I think AAA is a waste of money the qaulity of service has tanked in the last few years, you end up waiting over 6 hours for a tow in my area and it's only covered for like 7 miles. So I patch the sidewall well aware this is not something one should really do. It holds air for about 25 miles and then literraly blows the plug out of the wall, at this point I'm only 3 miles from home. I patch it again and this time it's much worse, even with a patch it's audibly leaking but I say "fuck it" and drive about 1.5 miles then fill up to about 45 PSI with my onboard compressor and make it home. Next day I have to get the vehicle to my preffered local tire shop. I punch out of work early and attempt to make it 3 miles, and then all shit comes loose, the plug is literally lasting 1/4 mile now, it's not leaking air, it's blowing out the plug strait out after 1/4 mile. I've got 2 miles to go and no spare, I have 2 replacement rims in the back of the vehicle. If I call a tow it's going to take an hour to get to me, and I'm sure they'd take me the last 2 miles to the tire shop no problem but, the place is going to be closed. At this point I just said "fuck it", I'm replacing the tire and replacing the rim, both are equally fucked. So I continue on, on a compleately flat rear tire. The first mile wasn't so bad I was driving about 5mph and got the usual "kerplunk-kerplunk-kerplunk" of a flat tire. After that the tire started to shred, I'm watching this thing in my side view and rubber starts to fly off the tire, the kerplunk turns into almost a banging noise, I'm 3/4 mile away from the tire shop and it's getting ugly. I reduce my speed to about 2-3MPH, people are staring at this vehicle going down the road making this horrible noise. Rubber is flaking off flying everywhere, road noise is awful. I finally make it to the tire shop, give the guy the two new rims and pay for 4 new tires. I explain twice this rim is to thrown away don't even attempt to try to mount a tire to it. The new rims and new tires went on without issue and alignment was good, not certain I'll ever do something this foolish again. I just figured, the rim is being replaced the tire is being replaced, I've got 2 miles to go, how bad could it be?

Got in a wreck. Everyone is ok. My XG350 did its job well, but it's done at this point, which is sad. Had full coverage on it though. Might get this F-250 from the 80's for sale in my neighborhood since it's going for cheap, though I'm wary since it's a gas guzzler guarantee, probably has issues. Any recommendations for a car? A cheap one, I'm thinking a old Toyota or Honda.

I did get my CD's out though, so I still have Bob Seger to keep me company

Damn dude good to hear no one was injured. What's your budget? Since you talked about getting something with more utility to haul your welding supplies, I would look into the GMT800 SUVs like the Tahoe/Yukon. They can be found for under 5k. If you're lucky the seller will have rebuilt the transmission. The 4L60e is the only main weak spot on those rigs.

Budget wise, Whatever comes back from the wreck. Most of it is alright, engine compartment wasn't damaged, lots of good parts on it, just the mileage... it's over 140,000. I'll be lucky to get out the 4k I bought it for.

Just got a tomos a3 1981_Tomos_Bullet_A3.jpg
Not this one but close enough. Bought it non-running. Took a while to figure out the points ignition. Like nothing I've ever seen and a little difficult to set up. These are so simple it's a double-edged sword. Dropping the engine only takes 55 minutes but you have to drop it every time to change carb jets. Upgraded the carb to a 15.15 Dellorto SHA. Fires up in half a kick, even with 4000-ish miles.

Fun fact: if there's an issue with the taillight it will not run. The ignition coil primary is run through the taillight assembly. Very simple, but annoyingly so.

Well the search for a new car is going well. Actually finding a lot in the 2000-4000 dollar range, good ones. Might end up with a mid 90s Ford Taruas or Mercury Grand Marquis. Kinda want the Mercury, the mileage will suck, and will need to install a modern CD player, but that big trunk and V8 man is just calling to me.

Plenty of other cars too, many smaller, which is the much more economical decision; really it just depends on who calls me back and how much money I get for my wreck
