Ruggero Deodato, the controversial film director behind the infamous horror flick Cannibal Holocaust, has announced the upcoming release of a new video game set in the world of his original Cannibal movie trilogy. Dubbed Cannibal, the game is developed by Fantastico Studio using the direction and script from Deodato. Set to be released this November, an official reveal trailer has also been unveiled for the game.

Deodato’s original film trilogy includes Jungle Holocaust (1977), the much more well-known Cannibal Holocaust (1980), and Cut and Run (1985). The new Cannibal video game is described by the studio as the “fourth, highly awaited chapter of [Deodato’s] cannibals cycle,” suggesting the game will essentially be a new sequel to the cult classic films. It remains to be seen if the game will feature just as much graphic violence, but I can’t imagine it’s going to be easy for Fantastico to get this one past the ESRB.

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t show us any actual gameplay footage, instead showing off some of the official artwork for Cannibal spliced with film clips. Still, the game has me intrigued, and from Friday the 13th: The Game to Blair Witch and now Cannibal, I’m all for the trend of developing new video games based on classic horror movies. Let’s just hope this brings us one step closer to getting that modern game based on A Nightmare on Elm Street I’ve been wanting as well.

For now, you can check out the official reveal trailer for Cannibal below.

“Cannibal is an interactive horror graphic adventure with the direction and script of Ruggero Deodato, in which the player will take control of different characters, to reveal, little by little, the background that led them to a desperate expedition to the virgin jungles of Borneo.”

Why anybody thinks this is a good idea I'll never know, I'm almost guessing it ends up like Telltale games type of thing?

Is it going to include a rape and kill option? I don’t know how this could be made into a game. Do you eat the film crew or be the film crew escaping.

Does it come with different collector's editions that give you a real animal to butcher?

No way in hell it will live up to any of those old euro giallos and sleaze flicks and gorefests.

Cannibal Holocaust is one of my favorite pleb filters for people who merely claim they "like bad movies" because they watched a season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 with a roomate in college they haven't spoken to since they graduated. Good luck with the game, though, I hope it turns out good, but I know it won't turn out appropriately horrible!

That's fucking badass. I used to be real into these Italian giallo/exploitation films when I was like 12/13, and this is the first sort of feeling of nostalgia that I've felt in a while.

This actually could be an awesome survival horror game so long as they don't make it some asymmetrical multiplayer clone or some Telltale Games-esque point-and-click bullshit.

The hard part is going to be getting it passed by the ESRB without getting an AO rating if they go the Survival Horror route.

That might be why it's going to be released on the Switch as well as the PS4, since Nintendo no longer has a censorship policy for third-party titles, unlike their family-friendly first-party fare.

As long as a third-party is approved by the ESRB and doesn't get an AO rating, they'll allow it on their platform. Sony and Microsoft both adopted stricter censorship policies last year, with special focus being directed at fanservice or anything that can be construed as such. Italian cannibal films from the 70's and 80's often had lots of nudity in addition to all the gore and violence.

Maybe the PS4 and Xbox One versions will be censored more, but the Switch and Steam releases will try to push the ESRB Mature rating to the maximum?

I'm not going to dismiss this game just yet. It could either be really awesome, or really bad.

I'm not going to be expecting much, but at least I can be rest assured that the theme will still be top notch as always

Hopefully the game is more like Cut & Run than the other movies.

I'm still waiting for the film elements of the uncut version to surface.

This scene was in the Japanese tape and all DVD/BLU releases take this scene from that tape and have remastered it as best as they can. It's a fun nonsensical Jungle/Horror/Action flick.

All movie video games are terrible anyways.

Missing something important. Spider-Man 2. GTA for those who weren't allowed to even play Bully as kids.

Heard Operation Genesis was a good Jurassic Park game. Let's not forget Battle For Bikini Bottom.

The Forest was compared to Cannibal Holocaust prior to release and there's some similarities but it's more of a take on Deodato's Last Cannibal World AKA Jungle Holocaust. It does invoke the whole "I wonder who the real cannibals are" question.
