Lol. Lmao. This process is completely in line with SmithUpdate: Since between the two petitions there are 700,000 signatures (that are presumed to not overlap significantly), We will be holding a combined referendum question, "Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?"
This question is Not in compliance with the Clarity act, but if Albertans vote for separation...Reactions:x 5
So Alberta will be having the seperation question, but it will not be a Clarity Act compliant question. Honestly this is better as it frees the province to actually openly discuss the process and trade deals of seperation so people can make an informed decision before the actual Clarity Act compliant vote.
Plus this question happens two weeks before the US midterms so it has the highest possible chance of getting a vote to begin the seperation process
Her intent is to have the voters shoot this down so it shuts up the separatist half of the UCP. If it wins with a majority no vote? She'll slow roll the second binding vote to give time for the fear mongering and second thoughts to win out and tilt opinions back towards rejecting separation. It's basically the strategy Cameron's Cons in the UK in would've followed for Brexit if they understood the strength of the leave vote.
With that said though the nature of the vote could see this backfiring for her; the question as written might actually see a majority in favour of a binding referendum because some progs and NDP smooth brains might figure forcing one will help their cause come next year's election or allow more opportunity to screw with the UCP in the courts. There's a lot of room for shenanigans with this one.
