You don't just need sugar maple trees, you also need a hard cold season (sugar weather). This is because to tap the sap it needs to be moving, something the trees do when the nights are freezing and daytime temperatures are under 60 but well out of freezing range. In the south this doesn't happen so you have neither the volume of sap flow (and the pressure required to efficiently tap) nor the sugar concentration necessary to economically concentrate the syrup. They do make bigleaf maple syrup on the West Coast but you'll pay out the ass for it for these reasons - less concentrated sap and less osmotic pressure make it much more expensive to produce.

If you read the news, you would know that in December, we lost 35,400 jobs in high-paying sectors like manufacturing. This comes after PM Carney says he's opening the visa routes again since unemployment was 6% in February, including fast-tracking foreign workers in certain sectors like healthcare.

I talked to a few Syrupeans friends during Covid that were getting unemployment because their jobs were deemed "non-essential", and they complained that despite having worked enough days/hours to qualify for the full amount of coverage they'd normally be allowed to get unemployment for, they were switched to whatever "Covid support payments" were arranged, it wasn't any more money. it ran out sooner, and there was massive fraud going on that seemed to be almost entirely among the immigrant population and the native tribes.

So bill c-4 got to royal assent stage meaning no more debates, just a procedural approval. What’s wrong with this “Making Life More Affordable for Canadians Act” ? Well politicians won’t talk about it nor will it be covered is that a quarter of the whole bill part 4. This part deals with data privacy laws of political parties.

This bill will write into the elections act that all federal political parties and agents are immune to any provincial or federal privacy laws and will attempt to retroactively apply it to the year 2000.

This means any federal party or agent of can collect any information, use it in any way they see fit, not report on it, and not correct any data.

The surrounding circumstances of the bill is pretty insane on how it was passed this week with mp telling the senate to go fuck themselves over the one amendment to sunset it in 3 years and the senate then withdrawing the proposed amendment. With no mps push back or voting against the bill.

Michael Giest is reporting on how crazy this has been.

Story time!

Had to do training for accounting. Was a pretty good course, except for one thing; the instructor was a typical short haired, white-haired karen boomer. She was pretty good overall, but she would randomly just insert Trump into her talks, sometimes even saying things like she hopes he would drop dead, or blaming him for our economic troubles and praising Carney, even though it was his policies causing the problems. Typical environmentalist, blamed oil companies for almost everything wrong. And, I kid you not, she unironically said "elbows up" with a smile.

I live and work near a reserve, so I rarely ever see liberal white women where I live. It was fascinating seeing one in the wild. Basically every stereotype of a white canadian liberal boomer woman.
