Not in this weather it's not at least

Comparatively speaking, Toronto has it good, though it's not saying much because we still have 40cm snow and freezing rain (which is worse than the former). The cold in places like Edmonton are known to be much more brutal.

Toronto is a pretty good example of this. For all the "canadians are so friendly and nice" stereotypes, toronto is easily one of the most antisocial and unfriendly places I have ever seen.

It has to be the most. Sometimes the utter soulless and bland corporatism of the city combined with the failed everything mixing into a complete lack of identifiable culture gets you numb.

Last time I was there before the pandemic I saw the notorious old ratttlin' change-cup granny begger lady spit in a black woman's face and hit her right in the eye and called her a nigger in a very loud and sudden way because she declined a donation. Black woman was stunned and started to cry. Likely an American of some sort. I guess the old lady being shoeless in February was not an immediate give away that maybe this is not the world's best, friendiest or safest city.

I said to myself thank got I always gave her change. I don't need to go to the chink hospital or some walk-in with Dr. Poofingers MD the needle re-user to get tested for AIDS where I wind up catching AIDS and typhoid or something..

Ok here's something weird

The Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Kings bench has released a statement today. Something that's never been done before and I'm honestly not sure what triggered it. Courts usually stay neutral in any political situation but all 3 Chief Judges ( Court of Kings Bench, Court of Appeal and Court of Justice) signed the statement.

https://albertacourts.ca/docs/defau...from-the-chief-justices.pdf?sfvrsn=22b2cc82_1

Text follows:

As proud Albertans, we care deeply about this province and the people of Alberta.
The judges on Alberta’s three courts—the Court of Justice, the Court of King’s Bench and the
Court of Appeal—recognize that our fundamental role is to serve Albertans. We do this by
upholding our oath of office to decide each case honestly, impartially, and to the best of our
ability. We know that our decisions can profoundly impact the people who come before the
courts. We take this responsibility seriously.
A properly functioning democracy requires three separate branches of government that exercise
their power and authority independently according to the Constitution.
The executive branch makes policy and manages government operations. The legislative branch
makes laws. In turn, the judicial branch interprets and applies those laws to disputes brought
before the courts. If a party requests it, judges may be required to interpret and apply the
Constitution and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and make a ruling.
The independence of each branch ensures there are checks and balances across the system. It is
the foundation of a healthy democracy. Public trust and confidence in our institutions—and all
three branches of government—depend on it. It is equally important that each branch respect
and support the independence of the others.
Independence of the judicial branch protects the public. It ensures judges can make decisions
based solely on the law and evidence presented. It frees judges from pressure or influence from
external sources including the governments that appoint us.
Each day in Alberta’s courthouses, judges apply the law—to protect individual rights, decide
disputes fairly and hold parties, including governments, accountable. The rule of law means no
one is above the law, everyone is treated equally before the law, and power is not used
arbitrarily. Alberta’s judges will continue to do this work faithfully.
Alberta’s judges are Albertans, like the people we serve. We are proud of the work judges and
staff do every day to protect the rights of all Albertans and to safeguard our democracy.

This is probably push back against Ottawa's increasing pressure on the judiciary to adhere to Federal...ideals, I guess? Carney and his crew have been pushing hard to get the provincial courts to get in line with Federal moves and is most definitely aimed at any thought of separation that will have to be decided in the courts.

In truth I'm not really sure what these 3 Chief Judges are trying to say or who they're saying it too but this is 100% something new, I have no memory of all 3 Chief Judges coming together to make a joint statement in any province at all time in Canadian history let alone one that calls out Ottawa for trying to pressure them into...something.

All I can say is that this signifies...something. I just duno what. Strange times.

It sounds like they are saying that the judicial branch will support Alberta seperating or consider seperating a legally valid move, but they are required to remain objective so that they can't give clear support.

I can confirm the unfriendly part. I was driving back from Toronto Pearson after being overseas, I merge into the lane to head to Niagara Falls, and this guy gets extremely upset that I apparently cut him off. How did I cut him off? Well I merged into the lane when he was 15 car lengths behind me and the cunt speeds up to get on my ass. I kid you not. This motherfucker speeds up to tailgate me and tries to make it seem that I cut him off. Toronto drivers, you're all dogshit, I genuinely hope you all die in a ditch.

Its really hard for me to take the "returning big chungus to gamestop" guy's political slop seriously.

Like i said the actual immigrants that we want are getting drowned out by the liberals demand for growth and influx of jeets.
At what point do you get a punch card?

It’s very funny they use “foreign interference” as justification while demanding Alberta bend the knee to “First Nation.”

Imagine asking for “permission” from a non-nation, with no military or resources, to declare your independence.

Those natives are gonna be pissed when they realize an independent state doesn't actually have to follow Canadian law and the treaties made with Canada don't technically apply to it. No more infinite nativebux, no more special laws, you're just like everyone else now. The lack of infrastructure WILL be addressed and the poverty WILL be solved.
...
Fuck, who am I kidding, reality would never be that based. But if it was, oh man-

No, this is the bench trying to poke Smith and the UCP in the eye over the separatism referendums. Since Smith came out with wanting to remove the ability of the court of preemptively determine the constitutionality of said referendums some of the judges have been in a snit over having their hands tied, especially given all of them to a fault are guaranteed anti-separation.

Ontarians elevate driving to a Special Olympic sport.

I think Alberta seperating requires them to honor the treaties, but the treaties never promised infinite gibs.

weird that the bands in Québec never made these arguments during the Referendum in the 90s. I wonder if that's a precedent.
