Canada is a cultural and political backwater. For a while we had some economy to fall back on, but now we don't even have that. A century from now Canada will be a myth with people hotly debating it ever existed. The only evidence is a vaguely pornographic novel written in the 1980s, an extremely pornographic novel about a bear written in 1970s and a show about a man fixing things with duct tape.

I'd consider pre-COVID Canada to at the very least be a high quality authoritarian country if nothing else. Even if we were behind the rest of the west in many ways, Canada was still good enough for the problems to be tolerated, especially if you're someone from a third or even second-world background. I mean you have Indians who are WILLINGLY going back to India now, that's how bad snow Mexico has become. Canada definitely does not matter on a global scale, are arguably not even on a regional scale. Even before 2015, all foreigners thought of Canada was how "diverse and inclusive" we are, and as more and more people get fatigued by "wokeness," so will they eventually get "Canadian fatigue."

Late in this thread but as former Albertan/Alberta airline employee and living overseas as an active cabin crew member with a major EU carrier…

The AC strike was and is reformative. Westjet will likely strike in April and the precedent was set by AC. I have seen some paid sponsor ads come up on my limited and anonymously social media already for “unpaid work won’t fly.” When not on mobile I’ll reply and link.

Cabin crew in Canada are only paid from brakes off to breaks on. No boarding, no ground delay, no helping finding seats, no exceptional needs passengers ie wheelchairs, infants. On widebody no pre departure service. Not the welcome drink, the seat tour, hanging of coats, meal and wine pairing orders. All unpaid.

For the crew of a WestJet 787 - they are required to check in 90 minutes before departure time. Galley positioned cabin crew will show up 30 minutes before technical check in, unpaid to get their service carts set up because catering just a smash of carts with no rhyme or reason, the aft galley flight attendants have to rearrange it all and prepare for service UNPAID.

There’s cabin crew living off food banks (and competing with TIFW and IFS for access) in Canada.

My sister has been cabin crew for AC for 20 years and her T4 says $36,000.

Canadians are being told, those in safety positions, to fuck off. Foreign over safety.

Our family (3 kids) will continue to stay in the Eu until Canada fixes their shit, I recognize that with my dual citezenship, and my husband being full EU I am privledged.

Canada is toast.
