As an American both aware, and has the means to do so, for a lot of things its kinda a wash. You get a 30% nominal discount, but a lot of shit is either 1) Marked up appropriately that theres no real difference after accounting for taxes or 2) due to general availability of things, you get gouged harder on Canada prices. Big example recently is furnace Air Filters. My wife needed some for her house. It was about 150 CAD for a pk of 6 on amazon.ca, picked up a similar box for 40 USD on amazon.comMinor aside, I am surprised Canada isn't advertising more just how good the exchange rate of dollars to looney's is. 1 USD is worth 30 cents more then 1 CAD right now. That is an amazing exchange rate. You could get alot of Americans to go take vacations in Canada. Gamble in the Niagra casinos or just generally go north to Buy shit like a TV, clothing or liquor.
But most Americans are unaware they can do this, or just what a +30% exchange rate benefit translates into. Especially for large purchases. In many respects, for an export economy like Canada's, a weaker CAD to the USD should be a huge economic benefit. But it seems Ottawa views this as shameful and there has been no effort made to actually make Americans aware of it.
Electronics are generally equivalent enough, Gas is generally (but not significantly) cheaper here if you keep an eye on prices (Fuck selling gas in liters and the fact that the price can swing 10 cents a day), fine dining and services are cheaper up there. Thrift stores are a steal up there. Most food is cheaper, but its not really an apples to apples comparison.
