I don't see a meaningful way for Alberta to leave. Its landlocked status hurts their ability to trade with anyone either than Canada or the US. You'd really need to carve off British Columbia and Alberta at bare minimum to create a viable, independent nation. Otherwise, Alberta is stuck as a vassal state to its neighbors. That said, a western Canadian state comprised of everything west of Ontario would be very successful, especially if it can be argued that invited jeets were granted citizenship and work visas by the residual eastern Canadian state. If it could be achieved, Vancouver's port can be updated to modern standards and international trade becomes quite easy. Bonus points if a least security border crossing with Washington state could be established to make trade and tourism easy with the US. Economically, a hypothetical western Canadian state is going to be a resource extraction economy for the most part. This isn't necessarily a bad thing provided that the revenue isn't wasted in dumb projects. Norway seems to be quite happy as a cold oil state.
