The founding fathers were deists, which is just a fancy way of saying they were atheists presenting themselves in a way that hayseeds could find tolerable. Their actions also inspired much more unequivocatingly atheist responses towards the 'value' of monarchism in France.

They wrote so on a document directed specifically at British monarchists in a language even they might have a chance of cluing in on. Then when they actually founded the nation they explicitly mandated a separation of church and state because medieval superstition has no place in a government structured around self-evident rights.

Mehhh, I wouldn't think so. "Many" is sort of an overstatement, plus most of these guys moved back to the USA once the war was over.
