Czechia and Slovakia split up peacefully in the 90s. Montenegro also split from Serbia peacefully in 2006. The Soviet Union also crumbled into its component parts, though not always as peacefully. We're on the cutting edge here. I don't think a first world country has ever had parts split off outside of like France and the UK decolonizing after WW2, but correct me if I'm wrong.
In terms of other recent (violent) splits:
South Sudan splitting from Sudan
East Timor splitting from Indonesia
The reason I'm skeptical, even though I also support it, is mostly due to the total incompetence of separatist groups. Chucklefucks and lolcows everywhere. Between the absolute kamikaze joke that was the Alberta Republican Party (which split the sep vote and handed talking points to the federalists on a platter), the complete lack of desire by the APP to appeal to anything outside of rural areas, and cringe AI slop being spat out by terminally-online sep influencers, the likelihood of making 51% on a referendum is low. And that's not even considering the cargo-cultism that goes on with regards to muh constitooshin. Dreadful. That's why I'm skeptical of Alberta independence despite my support of it. It would require a complete institutional overhaul, which would necessitate a change to a republic and shed any vestiges of the crown. Unfortunately, Alberta is just as saturated with (provincial) government employees who will fight tooth and nail to keep the status quo as well as too many with a rose-colored view of Canada as a whole. This country cannot be saved because no one wants to take the drastic measures needed even address the structural issues. For all the lip-service the neoliberals give to change, they benefit too much from the persistent stagnation and conditioned the populace to accept its miserable lot so that they will never demand actual accountability. Separation only shifts the problem from Ottawa to Edmonton.
Granted, Smith is far more practical on the issue of immigration and I trust her more than I do Carney.
