It's not inconceivable. Trump has already moved to give Afrikaaners in South Africa preferential access to immigration into the USA.This is unironically the best way for Trump to get Canada. If he opens up immigration for skilled tradesmen and gives concessions to make it easier for Canadian citizens under 35 to make it to the States, Canada will die overnight. A large part of our brain drain problem and stagnation is due to competent degree holders moving to the US at the first opportunity (just look at our medical system). If the same happens to the trades, the economy and all infrastructure ceases to exist as well.
Of course the situation in Canada is not yet at the level of South Africa. There is also the issue that Trumps talk of 51st state and the Canadian PM being a governor was due to his personal hatred of Justin Trudeau. It should be noted Mexico has been very quiet in the latest tussel and there has been little to no mention of trade disputes on the Southern border.
Carney and the Canadian Liberals very deliberately decided to escalate the dispute with America because they saw it as a winning strategy to pull them out of a short term domestic political crisis. Which it has done. But the trade off for going all in to win in the short term is that you now accrue a debt to the long term.
The people who put Carney in power now expect him to follow through on his campaign promise to avenge noble Canada on the traitorous Americans. As for the Americans, all the talk about Justin Trudeau being the governor of the 51st state was a joke. Insofar as Americans have a beef with Canada it is largely rhetorical banter. Carney however has promised to enact consequences for it, and how he goes about it could turn the banter into a bar fight.
And if that happens, let's just say it won't be America getting thrown out the door onto the street.
