Drugs should be legal, but heavily looked down upon and ostracized.Where I start to have a problem is when people expect the government or medical system to be their drug dealer
Its what I don't get about Canada. Look at Europe and Portugal, for example. The government does have welfare, but its with strings. You will get a hotel, you will get food and money to live off of, but only if you are in a rehab program and have a case worker. To me, this is reasonable enough. If you want to shoot up heroin and don't want to change, you do you. Thats where your functional addict fits in.
Add the fact that if you commit a crime while under the influence, you are often given the choice of rehab or jail in Europe.
These systems only work with incentives to try to get clean. If youre giving people money with no strings attached, many of them are just going to continue shooting up drugs.
There are things we should be doing and enforcing. Much like the grooming gangs in the UK, police choose which laws to enforce and which not to.
Public intoxication is still a crime, yet when a homeless addict is screaming at a wall, obviously either having a mental health crisis, or on something, or both- police just let them continue. Not in Portugal. This is something I really do not understand, as it literally makes our streets completely unsafe and is against the law
